Robocop 2014 (Post-release)

Just got back from seeing this. I'm a huge fan of the original and I have to say, I really loved this modern take on the franchise. Definitely not the Robocop we all remember but I thought it was well done. Nice seeing some nods to the original too. Just go in with no expectations and enjoy the film. Bring on part 2!

Welp io9 apparently got paid off for their review, then again reviewers can't be trusted since their livelihoods are tied to kissing the studio's butts. Yeah the new "auto-9" handgun is a tazer weapon which shows how big a sissy world this robocop lives in. It has hand print ID (thus the real hand left as a lazy out) and all this other security stuff that would make it useless in the real world.
I didn't like this movie, but presuming others would review it positively only because they were paid off is beyond ridiculous.

My .02 cents...

I haven't seen it yet, but I think I'll wait for it to hit the stores. I remember going to the theatre as a kid and seeing the original on the big screen, and barring the original X-rated cut (which is what the Criterion Edition really is), there is no topping it.

It wasn't too bad. I don't care for how agile Murphy is, and the bad guys didn't leave me rooting for him to off them either. The Red Asset bit at the end with Keaton was kind of a nice idea, but it's not nearly as fist pump awesome as the "you're fired" bit in the original. I could have done with some more ED-209 love also.

Overall just unnecessary, but it wasn't as repugnant as I thought it might be so I guess that's a wash in my book.

The io9 reviewer also gushed over I, Frankenstein if i recall, so her judgment, taste, and general moral health are all clearly questionable.

i thought it was an okay movie with the ingredients to make a great one. The ideas and concepts were there but they weren't explored to their full potential. Editing was a little off especially towards the middle. Joel was okay when he's in the suit. The PG-13 did hinder it and it was a studio decision which left José's hands tied.

Haha I never even picked up on that's why they left his hand on, You would think having NFC in his robot hand would be a better solution than an obvious fleshy weak spot!

I was researching the auto-9 and the new gun popped up on the robocop wiki and i'm assuming that's why they kept the hand. That gun is a civilian model with all these safety awards hooked to it in the movie universe. So not only did they castrate the character they took away his firepower. I see one commercial for the movie a day which is sad as it opens today, seems to me the studio has no faith on it making a ton in the US. Overseas it did well because there's not much else going on action movie wise in a lot of countries. http://robocop.wikia.com/wiki/NI-408

I absolutely loved this movie.

My likes:

The strong family storyline. Much better than the original.
All the armor, even the black one. The silver was a great nod to the original.
The weapons. Not wimped down at all. Even the taser could be lethal, and he killed plenty of bad guys.
Samuel Jackson. I thought this was a vital part of the story - influencing public opinion.
The robotic movement. Plenty of nods to the original, and quite realistic for robots of today, let alone 2028.
Michael Keaton - Great performance, great villain.
Gary Oldman - Perfect as usual.
Loved the use of the original music.
Loved the actual Detroit filming locations. Not sure any of the original (other than the Cobo Hall flyover) was filmed there.
The biological Murphy. That was messed up!
The nutrition infusion system. So much better than a baby food dispenser.
The drug house bust. Very reminiscent of the original, but much shorter.
ED-209, Awesome!
Police corruption. I didn't see the Chief involvement coming.
PG 13 rating - didn't take anything away from the story or the action.

My "could have done betters" (not many):

The hand on a stick. I'm not going to loose any sleep over it.
The warehouse training music. Quite forgettable and didn't add anything to the scene.
Rick Mattox character. I just couldn't buy he was smart enough to be a robotics engineer.
The marketing guy. Just annoying.
Antoine Vallion. Why not use Clarence Boddicker? And he was taken out too easily.

All of the above is just my personal opinion. It's OK if you disagree with any or all of my points. I plan on seeing it again.

I just saw this in IMAX too. It was DEAFENINGLY Loud.

All-in-all i thought it was pretty damn good, but as Nitrox pointed out, Why the Hell did they keep his Right Hand.

It was Distracting as hell. I think it was an Homage to the Original Movie, where they tried to "Save the Arm" and the guy says "We agreed on TOTAL BODY PROSTHESIS".

Now I just gotta find the Energy to Make a Robocop Suit. Loved the Look, loved what he stood for (elimination of Police Corruption), and Loved the Enforcement Droid 209.

Just gotta get Motivated so I can Make some ED209s too.

My main beef with it all was two things..

1. The fact Murphy kills the unarmed cop.

2. Shaky cam. Not needed

Otherwise I thought it was really good.

killing the unarmed cop is something I forgot to mention. I was surprised when that happened too. I guess it was Murphy's emotional high taking over his actions. And the shaky cam, I guess I'm getting used to it. All movies seem to be doing it now and I barely noticed it.

Also... stupid bad guys - "Let's turn out all the lights and the robot won't see us".

I will add I really like how they handled the family element of it. Also with all the filming photos I thought I would hate the suit. It was really good and didn't seem like ironman which I was expecting.

I thought it was alright, too much Sam Jackson imo, I also thought the suit worked out pretty well, though overall I definitely prefer the silver finish, a lot of nice details got lost on the black suit, I found the scene where we see exactly what is left of Murphy quite effective and well executed, from an effects perspective anyway

I was honestly speechless when we saw what was left of him. WELL acted scene!

I went in expecting a dud and was very pleasantly surprised. This was a hell of a movie!

Have not seen it yet. But it seems like the consensus is "go in, don't expect it to be true to the original or expect much else and you will enjoy it".

Man, I'm torn. You guys saying you love it...give me your top 5 movies...IN THE LAST DECADE.

just seen it and thought it was great.
