Robin costume

I am working on a costume that I've been dreaming about since I was 10 years old (I am 38 now). I want to put together a Robin costume - Dick Grayson era.

What I need is some advice. I need to know, should I make a shirt with green sleeves or a red tunic and a green shirt under.

I have blonde hair, should I go with a wig and where can I get a good one that won't cost me my retirement fund?

Bat-Belt. How do I make one?

Advice, please. I welcome any and all.

By Dick Grayson era, do you mean the Burt Ward Robin?

To your first question, yeah, the red tunic and green shirt could work.

To your second question, you could go with temporary hair dye. you can just wash it off when you're done.

I don't know much else to your other questions, yet good luck!

I can't find the photo, but I'm pretty sure I've seen one of Burt Ward on set wearing just the T-shirt so I would "assume" the red tunic is a separate piece.

I can't go full Burt Ward, reason being is that the R patch I found is from the comic book era. My costume will be cobbled together from the comic and from the 60's TV show.

Hi,

Doesn't sound like you are creating a replica of any particular costume so you are free to do what you like.

I've created a replica Robin costume based on the 60's TV show and I can tell you it won't break the bank but it also not small change to put together.

We took patterns off an original costume from the show.
Attached is a comp of my wife wearing the original and the replica.

We got lucky and found the last yards of fabric on the bolt of what we believe to be the original wool fabric used on the vest from one of the fabric supplier to the show.
The exact fabric for the trunks is no longer made. We got lucky again and found a small supply.

We do make one with a fabric similar to the original but not the exact fabric for a fraction of the price of the true replica.

Sounds more like you want a wearable costume for yourself and we only made replicas of the original costume.

Happy to help if I can.

Basically, this isn't cannon. I just want him to be recognized. I'm throwing in a little Dick Grayson, a little Tim Drake, A little Jason Todd.

I appreciate the pictures, I added it to my pic folder. That will help a lot.

I don't expect to spend my life savings but I'm not going to make it on the cheap either. I have a budget number in mind that ranges between $50 and $70

Thank you so much. Thus far, I only have the patch and the mask. I'm keeping a notebook and your suggestions help. I'll keep you posted.

Here are pics of my cloth-costumed Robin figure so you can see some of the details. Keep in mind that Dick Grayson wore the same costume from his debut as a kid around 1940 until the George Perez run in the early to mid eighties, when he quit, then eventually became Nightwing. By the time he stopped wearing the Robin costume, he was around 18. The figure I'm posting is based on the George Perez artwork, so that hairstyle is probably your best bet.

I've always heard that the costume used on the TV show included a green unitard and the red tunic, so the green shortpants and shirt would be all one piece. I've seen the same thing in the comics. Sometimes the comics show him with the yellow laces on the tunic, and sometimes they don't. So if you're not going for absolute screen accuracy, you may or may not care if you make them.
I'm a huge Robin fan, and can send you scans of comic art if you think if would help.

PS. Jason Todd's costume was the same as Dick's. The best way to add a little Tim Drake(and probably make the costume easier) would be to ditch the unitard and go with Tim's green leggings as well as adding the heavy-duty boots he wore.

Yikes! I am nearly 40. I hope I won't look silly in this thing . . . or just plain creepy. I'm about 5 foot 6 and about 180 lbs. I've got the height but I think I'll have to drop about 20 before next Halloween.

I was thinking about this at work today. I don't really like the laces, I may try something different. I was thinking of maybe making rectangular patches. Make them Velcro so I can keep the tunic closed and also slip it on and off easier. What do you think?

I would appreciate that. I sent you my email address in a PM.

I may ditch the unitard all together. I tried on some years ago for a Shaak Ti costume and the results were . . . unpleasant.

I may just go with a green short sleeve shirt and then some green tights. Maybe make things a touch easier.

Selk, if you don't mind me asking, are you a man or a woman? If you're a 38-year-old guy, just make sure you don't have a five o'clock shadow or anything like that. Another reason I mentioned the green tights as an alternative to the unitard is the legs. Dick Grayson wasn't very hairy, and his legs always looked like they were naturally smooth, or shaved.
If you're a woman of slight build, this costume might be perfect for you.

*** TMI WARNING ***

I'm a guy. blond hair, so the hair on my legs isn't very dark. I can do tights.

I can't wait to see how this turns out! I'm doing something similar with Batman right now (not a specific replica, but kind of a blending of my favorite elements from different versions) so it's definitely interesting to me. Will you be posting pictures of your progress?

My wife made the prototype costume and patterns for that Robin Doll for DC Comics!!

The comics changed details all the time but the suit from the sixties TV show was a green T-shirt (Jockey) and green trunks.
He did wear flesh colored tights.

FYI, just the fabric for the original vest alone would have blown your budget.

Have fun with your project!!

Slightly off-topic but your 1960s Batman mask replicas are what brought me to the forums in the first place after a Google search. You and your wife do amazing work!

/BROWN-NOSING :lol

So you're looking at doing something like this?

That's me. And I "am" 40 now. ;)

Trust me... You're never "too old" to be a "Robin".

Any questions fire away! :)

EDIT- Oh just to add- I didn't make this myself (I'm not "that" good yet ;) ). I had it professionally made for me. But I can tell you all about it.

arnt there a few dif Dick Greyson suits? never really was into the book, unless you want to do the one from that cheasy show in the 60s(?) which i think would be a red tunic with green sleeves stitched in. as far as a belt, maybe one of the Batman Begins belts?

Walgreens/Walmart both carry sray in hair dye - it lasts till you wash it out the next day so maybe you can look into that aswell.

now if only we can see a really good Nightwing costume lol
