RIP Dwayne McDuffie

Yeah, roughly my age. Dwayne was always a hoot at cons and never failed to have a clever or pithy thing to say after one of my crazy rants. I sure am sorry for his wife and family and closer friends. That's a damn shame.

I have an awesome Dwayne story that I will only share here (and on EJ Feddes' FB page, but you all don't know him so there's that). Me, as a white male of a certain age in the United States, I have a rarified luxury of philosophy. Through accident of birth and time and location, I basically get to... do what I want, but also through happenstance and upbringing I realize how blessed I am by nothing but chance.

So I was talking about this with McDuffie at a San Diego barcon once and I told him, after a particularly heartfelt story of his, that I didn't see the virtue of color or black-and-white in comics... that the only color I saw was GREEN.

Dwayne started to bristle and then said: "Oh. Yeah, yes." which I have always loved. The world will be like that one day, it will.

So sad. His Milestone run of books were awesome! I was a big fan of Blood Syndicate, Icon and Shadow Cabinate - the character i really liked was DMZ because they would only trickle background info about him. Oh well Dwayne - rest in peace, you deserved wayyyyy more respect than you got.
