Ridley Scott Prometheus: NOT the Alien Prequel Details

Isnt ALIEN technically a remake of DARK STAR? Or is ALIEN Sir Ridleys interpretation of DARK STAR? The foundation of the ALIEN universe was laid down in that "project" movie. I will be very interested to see if SRS uses any reference at all to any of the films made after his, especially Camerons as i would think in his mind, SRS, that only one ALIEN film was ever made.

Only in so far as it was originally written by Dan O'Bannon. O'Bannon and Shusett teamed up and really nailed the first part of the screenplay and then the team at Brandywine stepped in and made a lot of changes, including the character of Ash.

Isnt ALIEN technically a remake of DARK STAR?

No.

Obviously Dan O'Bannon had a thing for monster-on-the-loose-in-a-spaceship stories, a la It The Terror From Beyond Space, but ALIEN owes more to Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None than it does Dark Star.

Its times like these that i wish, a) I had Photosop and b) I knew how to work Photoshop cause a picture of the Beach Ball and the zeno in the Empire setting with the caption "Zeno, I am your father" would be cool.

Yes but am i the only one who sees residue of Dark Star all through ALIEN?

No. There's me too. Alien is an expansion of a Dark Star subplot. Plus, Brett's walk through the bowels of the ship to his doom is a definite 'version' of Pinback's similar lonely walk, especially when he picks up the shed skin, which is a repeat of the shot of O'Bannon with the shredded beach ball skin. Even the lighting is very similar in those shots. Also, the space-weary mood of the crew is a Dark Star hangover for sure. Different over-all plots, as Carson points out, obviously, but Alien is built in part on Carpenter's illustrious movie.

Btw, I hate the way the alien has come to be dubbed the xenomorph or xeno, through the influence of the later films. For me, it will always be 'the alien'.

They both featured blue-collar workers in space and an alien.

Just because ALIEN shares certain stylistic similarities with Dark Star doesn't mean it's a remake. I mean, Goodfellas has Robert DeNiro and a lot of Wise Guys whacking each other, but that doesn't mean it's a remake of The Godfather.

If ALIEN is a remake of anything it's It The Terror From Beyond Space.

Theres also the scene with the frozen Captains head Colin, remind you of Ash? What about Muther?
In reality Dark Star was O`Bannons movie and not Carpenters. After watching the doco on the Anniversary Disc you can see he did nearly everything on that film as well as write it. He also worked very closely with SRS on Alien but the only person who can say it is a remake or not is SRS and ive never heard or read of him talk about it

I agree about the zeno stuff but i had to use it for the gag.

Forgot, though not releated,
The Bishop, Hudson knive thing...............Dark Star.

I've seen a picture of some of the equipment in the movie, one resembles the powerloader. Plus I think that Scott has spoken highly of Aliens, especially the look of the film.

Thats something to look for.....dont get me wrong Stig, im not anti Cameron, Aliens is a masterpiece to me as is The Terminator, i just keep the two movies very seperate.

I'm guessing the reason Scott has never addressed the "Is ALIEN a remake of Dark Star?" question is because no one ever has been foolish enough to ask him.

Though it'd be worth it just to see his expression.
