Ridley Scott Prometheus: NOT the Alien Prequel Details

I watched it. Looks more promossing than the "posed for" official pictures. The muisic is a great tribute to the original.

I think I'm agreeing with all the comments thus far with regard to the suits. My own feeling when I saw them is that they seem to have a look that is set in a time much, much later after ALIEN. The spacesuits by Mobius and Mollo look like they come from a time when traveling and working in deep space is really, really tough. Difficult to maneuver in, difficult to work in. In the first movie that for me was part of the suspense....an astronaut wearing that bloody great suit cannot see well; breathing is labored; cannot move well and cannot react as well to danger. My own thoughts on the original design, anyway.

The new designs are sleek, appear easy to move in and the helmets give great visibility. It just doesn't look like the same universe to me right now. They do not even seem to fit in with the same world we are given in ALIENS. These designs are entirely new to the series, and I echo the same thoughts here made by others; they look like something from Enterprise or Dan Dare to me.

I'm also weary of the new Weylan(d?) Yutani logo...nothing like the WY logo on Alien and similar instead to the WY logo on Aliens/Alien3, which again to me is weird. Not saying it's bad...just surprising.

Maybe the design aesthetic for costuming / logo in ALIEN can be attributed to being the Japanese arm of Weylan(d) Yutani? Haven't a clue. And this probably isn't something that will addressed.

I hope they do run a trailer of some sort soon, as so far I'm just not feeling it. I am looking forward to the movie, I'm just not sure what to make of it all so far.

When you think of it the suits should not look more modern or streamlined than the original suits if this takes place before the original ALIEN movie.

Just wait... within the context of the story the more "streamlined" suit design(s) make sense.

I'm not concerned about the tech at all. I agree it's likely a matter of the space truckers have very old tech to work with that is just dirty and crappy, and these guys have brand new state of the art, never been used before, tech.

I don't get the hate for Scott's work either. I'm still a massive fan. Matchstick men, American Gangster, Kingdom of Heaven, even A Good Year had it's merit. I don't like every film he makes, but it does not diminish his talent, ability as a craftsman, or his ability to create great films. But I suppose I'm biased since he's made some of my most favorite films ever. :)

I really can't wait to see this. Connected to Alien or not, it's a Ridley Scott science fiction film! I'm there.

That's one thing I love about Scott. He's possibly the only director in the mainstream film industry who has managed to not get pigeonholed into one genre. He makes films that he finds interesting/has a passion for. Granted, some may not end up being great, but he's always trying new things, learning/developing more styles, and when used properly, will make a film that has many dimensions and rich layers.

With Prometheus, he's not just banging out an Alien film to cash in. He seems to have truly crafted an interesting and original story that excites him as an artist. True, it has the potential to diminish the mysteries of the original film, and it has the potential to be either overly intellectual or trite, but it has just as much potential to be another masterpiece. We just won't know until we see it...and even then, we're all going to have differing opinions on it.

It's art. It speaks to some, and turns others away.

Damn - I missed it. It's gone.

I'm not jumping to conclusions. It's too early to question the "look". I don't think the Post Traumatic Stress of the Phantom Menace will ever end, so I understand the concern.

Well said. :cool

I think alot of the concern comes from the studios handling of the franchise and not Ridley; many of us die-hard fans are trying to get over the Alien: Resurrection and AVP movie crapshoot.
And Ridley had alot of pressure from the studio during the making of ALIEN, and I think there was concern with Prometheus that Ridley would not be allowed to bring us the vision he would want.
But 32 years later after ALIEN, it looks like he has been allowed to film his vision for this movie and it'll pay off for the fans of the original and hopefully for the studio as well in box office.
Hopefully, it'll be an R rating and not a PG-13 as was previously suggested.

Also consider that he was a relative unknown back in '78. He's got a lot more pull nowadays, and I don't think he'll have to fight the studio nearly as hard as he did thirty years ago.

The trailer is tempting me to take the risk, to trade in my cherished conceptions of the jockey and derelict from the first film, and go and see this. I'd just feel happier if I could know in advance that Scott won't have me cringing in embarrassment at any point as he did through a good 25% of Gladiator (that underwear-models-in-scuba-suits photo ain't helping here, lol).

To those that missed it the link trailer may be gone but there are a few copies still out there if You look carefully daily hint hint. Given the huge number of hits the first got and the overwhelmingly positive respounce to it (despite the appalling quality) I would imagine FOX , if they have any sense , would get the proper HD version out quickly to capitalize on the VERY positive word of mouth it has generated.
I thought it was one of the most striking and powerful trailers I've seen in years. It completely turned my opinion from being quite negative (after those photos were shown) to not a little excited. It would be no exaggeration to say I got a thrilling shiver from the score and the way it was editted together with some very spectacular looking action shots.
It looks ( although its rather over optomistic to judge from a minutes worth of blurry footage) as if Ridley has got all the elements of design and compostion in that keep it well within the Alien Universe, even down to the way he's shot it. It felt like it was the bigger brother of Alien and that was a huge relief. Those derelict shots were brilliant.
I've no doubt there are a couple of versions of the trailer ,just as I hope there will be of the final film (any bets on a Directors cut on DVD eventually anyway anyone ?). I hope FOX release a double rated version of it , they could really do some damage to some box office records if they did. With this ,The Dark Knight Returns and The Hobbit 2012 is looking rather good.
