I think I'm agreeing with all the comments thus far with regard to the suits. My own feeling when I saw them is that they seem to have a look that is set in a time much, much later after ALIEN. The spacesuits by Mobius and Mollo look like they come from a time when traveling and working in deep space is really, really tough. Difficult to maneuver in, difficult to work in. In the first movie that for me was part of the suspense....an astronaut wearing that bloody great suit cannot see well; breathing is labored; cannot move well and cannot react as well to danger. My own thoughts on the original design, anyway.
The new designs are sleek, appear easy to move in and the helmets give great visibility. It just doesn't look like the same universe to me right now. They do not even seem to fit in with the same world we are given in ALIENS. These designs are entirely new to the series, and I echo the same thoughts here made by others; they look like something from Enterprise or Dan Dare to me.
I'm also weary of the new Weylan(d?) Yutani logo...nothing like the WY logo on Alien and similar instead to the WY logo on Aliens/Alien3, which again to me is weird. Not saying it's bad...just surprising.
Maybe the design aesthetic for costuming / logo in ALIEN can be attributed to being the Japanese arm of Weylan(d) Yutani? Haven't a clue. And this probably isn't something that will addressed.
I hope they do run a trailer of some sort soon, as so far I'm just not feeling it. I am looking forward to the movie, I'm just not sure what to make of it all so far.
When you think of it the suits should not look more modern or streamlined than the original suits if this takes place before the original ALIEN movie.
I don't get the hate for Scott's work either. I'm still a massive fan. Matchstick men, American Gangster, Kingdom of Heaven, even A Good Year had it's merit. I don't like every film he makes, but it does not diminish his talent, ability as a craftsman, or his ability to create great films. But I suppose I'm biased since he's made some of my most favorite films ever.![]()
That's one thing I love about Scott. He's possibly the only director in the mainstream film industry who has managed to not get pigeonholed into one genre. He makes films that he finds interesting/has a passion for. Granted, some may not end up being great, but he's always trying new things, learning/developing more styles, and when used properly, will make a film that has many dimensions and rich layers.
With Prometheus, he's not just banging out an Alien film to cash in. He seems to have truly crafted an interesting and original story that excites him as an artist. True, it has the potential to diminish the mysteries of the original film, and it has the potential to be either overly intellectual or trite, but it has just as much potential to be another masterpiece. We just won't know until we see it...and even then, we're all going to have differing opinions on it.
It's art. It speaks to some, and turns others away.
