Ridley Scott Prometheus: NOT the Alien Prequel Details

but...but...but...MINDBLOWING VISUALS!!!! If that isn't I'll-be-in-my-bunk level sci-fi eye candy I don't know what is. I'm giving it a cautious pass on story terms; we know it's von Daniken nonsense and screws with the purity of the Jockey concept but the tradeoffs look potentially worth it - as you say, that level of tension looks great and I'm on board to find out exactly what "we were so wrong!" really entails. Wrong about the map? The "invitation" being that, and not something much darker...what? I wanna know!

Yeah, it's not like I'm not seriously tempted by some of those visuals and the tension stuff ...

I thought they were saying they were wrong about the civilisation being cuddly and that.

He's anthropomorphized the Space Jockey. That is the first strike against Sir Ridley.

Yes, but we've known that for getting on for a couple of years. I've factored it in a long while back. Sad, but the tradeoff is a movie that looks like it just might be glorious.

I'm not exactly counting any chickens just yet though.

Yeah, that's my big gripe as well. If I was on the art team and they said the Jockey needed to be humanoid looking, I would have had the creatures be capable of mutating into different forms. Like the chair for example, they practically change their physical form to accommodate the best possible way to take advantage of their station, rather than wearing a suit.... which is ridiculous.

Depends on how they handle it. I have a theory of how the Engineer we see in the trailers fits into all this (and the plot of the film as a whole), and if I'm right, then it's handled in a way that will ease your fears about their appearance, and still leaves a hell of a lot of mystery wide open.

I could go into detail if you like, but it has the potential to be really spoiler-ful if I'm even close to being right, and I don't think we have spoiler tags on this board, do we?

My theory is this:

One of the crew members gets infected by that slime in the cave/pyramid, and starts changing (that first shot with the veins in his head.) He becomes almost possessed and his genetics are changed, and he starts turning into the space Jockey character. He goes onboard the ship and gets plugged into the chair, and then the ship is able to find earth because of the knowledge he still has in his half human brain.

Prometheus try to stop the ship, and sort of succeed.

Various friends are drawing the same conclusions from this trailer. There are certainly outright transformations, and Noomi's character gets confronted by something Jockey-looking but human-sized. And the original Engineers seem to be dead. So that's pretty much the leading theory right now I guess. Even if so, the original Engineers were humanlike enough and created us in their image, or something, it seems. We'll see.

Turns out we do have spoiler tags. Some thoughts:

I examined the trailers closer (especially the IMAX trailer), and there are some decidedly non-humanoid elements here and there that could be more the "true form" of the Engineers. Either that, or it's the thing that Shaw "births", having been impregnated by a post-infection Holloway before his own change.

That could be the "DNA" of Alien that Ridley was referring to, something foreign inside the body that becomes something horrible. Or maybe that's what becomes the Engineer? Hm.. didn't think of that. That seems to be the Engineers' modus operandi, and does provide a sort of link between the films without actually doing the same thing he did back in '79.

Prometheus has to stop the Engineer ship because its hold is full of the Engineers' genetic material, that would effectively wipe out humanity while recreating the Engineer race. It's got to be something large-scale like that to make them do what they do at the end to bring the ship down.

I'll say this: it looks amazing. And I respect Damon Lindelof as a writer. So maybe the story is pretty good. However, trailers are designed to make you think the movie is going to be amazing. Remember the trailer to The Phantom Menace? It was amazing too. Until it wasn't.

That said... expectations set on high. Especially viewed through my collectors mind set: I already want to see someone offer a model kit of the Prometheus. And the astronaut helmet! I could go on... and I probably will.

Just watched the full trailer. I dont care for the Dark knight sequel and see nothing but heroes posing in the avengers trailer, but prometheus..

I havn't been this excited about a movie since the trailers for Episode 1. Just looks soooo good. Ridley scott is such and excellent filmamaker I find it hard to believe that this film will fail to disapoint.

You're right; I too find it hard to believe that this film will fail to disappoint. :(

I still cling to hope that it WILL fail to disappoint, however! :)

Just watched the trailer and checked out Karls screen caps, which helped out a lot. Thanks Karl.

Am i right in thinking this takes place on LV426?

I'm glad he is sticking with the strong female lead running in hear undies formula! :behave

Is it just me or is Noomi Rapace kinda sorta smoking?:love

**I don't know where the spoiler tag is, so skip passed if you don't want to read.***

I'm leaning towards the "cut it off!" Scene as the shot we see with that tentacle looking squid thing coming out one of the crew members arm. My guess is it's the same poor guy we saw with the melting visor, who is infected with something that is absolutely changing him. We know one of them looks morphed and the guy standing in front of the waterfall is changing before our eyes, and it's probably the same guy we see attack another crew member who they shoot at although his body form is changing, you can still see he's wearing the same blue space suit.

I also think that 'we were so wrong' is in referrence to it's not an invitation, but rather a warning. Or if it is indeed a invitation.. It's one not of happiness and exploration, but more as bait to see who responds to wipe out your civilization. From what public knowledge they've given us and from the new trailer, Weyland had terriformed several colonies throughout space and they mentioned 6 places or so all with the same markings, .. to me it sounds like they (bad guys) were looking for something or obvioulsy intentionally left something as in saying.. you really wanna know? Come find out, and PS. Screw you. ( I could be so wrong myself)

No they're are some sort of creatures already on the planet..we know that from the other ship in the trailer..

Also read somewhere on another forum that some have suggested that the space jockey aliens could actually be Weylands first andriod series that they sent out to build those other worlds who they left abandoned and stranded, and they evolved and basically turned on their masters..

ie (and I'll probably screw up this quote..sorry) God creates man. God creates man in his image. Man creates man in his image. Man creates God. Man pisses God off and God hits the reset button.

I could see that in some ways.. How is it that Weyland knew about the first distress signal anyway, why was Ash's mission so important.. because they already knew. I think David CAN read what's on the wall and may have left the orignal message that the Nostromo finds.. He's company built after all and Theron's character seems to corner him in the hallway.. he's not all forth coming with info. We'll see. We all have speculations at this point and the trailer was fantastic! Excited for sure!

Whetver they find we hear Shaw's character basically say if we don't stop it there won't be anything to go home to and it looks like they intentionally crash prometheus into the ship.. Don't think that works exactly cause we see it still see it fly/then crash. I've always thought the alien craft in Alien was more of 'bomber' type of ship. This will be interesting to say the least! We all have speculations at this point and the trailer was FANTASTIC! Excited for sure!
