Ridley Scott Prometheus: NOT the Alien Prequel Details

I just reread what I posted before, I think it's hard to believe that this film will fail to IMPRESS.

After rewatching the trailer and then looking at the still pics I REALLY need to get away from this thread to avoid spoilers! Yes! I clicked a few! Im weak!.

ALIEN is my second favorite film. Next to Star wars, the one I know the most about. It's almost as though he took all the unused script ideas from ALIEN and put them in there. The heiroglyphics, the egg silo. My mind is so blown. All other films this summer are second to this.

I am certainly seeing a lot of parallels between this release and the release of Ep. I fifteen years ago.

Not many. We ALWAYS new he'd do more star wars, so the anticipation was huge! It only came up in the last couple years that Scott decided to work on an alien sequel. As fans I think we always hoped someone would, but never thought it would happen.

I still find it funny that Scott is trying to down play the ALIEN aspects of this film yet from this trailer they are all over this film! One thing I am having some trouble reconciling is the tech. If this has a prequel vibe from ALIEN how does everyone feel about the technology they seem to have. Some of it seems much more high tech then in any of the ALIEN films.

In Alien, they are in an inter stella space craft that has the ability to mine deep in space, cryo sleep chambers and an onboard computer that has AI, not exactly low tech????

Think of it as a commodore 64 and and an XBOX 360, both working at the same time but sadly the poor family cant afford the 360 and makes do with the 64 for their whole lifetime.....the 360 still exists though does it not?

No, for sure all the same elements are there it's just the Prometheus gear is much more flash! And I get the visual limitations of 1979 vs. today and audience expectations are much different now as to what a big budget sic-fi film should deliver in terms of visuals. Reminds me of what JJ did with Trek a little. Having said that, it looks incredible, I suppose I just miss that amazing practical set effects done in ALIEN.

That trailer creeped me out. Pretty much all the Alien films do. I will be watching this through the cracks between my fingers, as usual.

Another consideration is that in Alien, they are bottom level "truckers". Their gear will not be as nice as Peter Wayland's private crew. It's like having Richard Branson funding your space flight.

Good point but then you would also think the colonial marines in Aliens would be more high tech. Really what this is for me is a strong desire to want this movie to be a true prequel to the franchise but understanding it's kind of but not really but kind of. And I for one am fine with that, I can't wait for this movie.

I think you have to turn a blind eye to the technological advances in this film, much as you have to with the star wars prequels. Just accept that this film will be a product of its time, and that it is the story that should bind it together. That said, I suppose they could have toned a few things down. The space suits look beautifully clean, but as benhs1898 says, they could be Bransonites, with money to burn, and the nostromo could be a sideline of Weyland Yutani... a workhorse to pay for the top-end scientific stuff.

Another thing that is funny is that people keep going on about practical effects. I was watching the extras on the Star Wars BluRays, and even on the prequels there was a huge reliance on miniatures. It is just that the miniatures are incredibly detailed, filmed with the latest advances, and in a much more controllable environment than ever before.

If Ridley was to film the original Nostromo model these days, it would easily look as good as anything you would see on prometheus.

Military design is always going to be more practical looking. The gear on the Prometheus is definitely not military equipment.

Star Wars doesn't count because the original trilogy takes place during galactic recession.

Overall not worried about look, just story.

Just watched the trailer. My thoughts: a) the first part reminded me of AVP, in a bad way. "All these cultures share the same imagery blah blah blah." Yawn. b) The whole derelict thing is a lot like Tales from the Mos Eisely Cantina. You have some random, tangential thing (a crashed ship in this case) and blow it into some huge, unnecessary back/side story (such as the bartender distilling Greedo's corpse. Yeah, I guess it could have happened, but...?).

I suspect this will be like Avatar: pretty as hell, one or two interesting, original conceits, and a whole lot of derivative and pretentious.

Hope I'm wrong, because I will definitely be there opening weekend :)
