Rhino Cosplay WIP

Thanks for all the replies and positive feedback. I was and am very excited about this project.

This is a culmination of months of work and research due to the fact that I am a full time Registered Nurse.

The next think I began working on was the neck back and hump. I decided to us another Lycra suit over the muscles to make a complete 1 piece costume. this did not work since the muscles were too big even for a XXXL Lycra suit. So I had to cut the neck and back and add pieces in to make it one piece.

The hump is a similar process to the helmet with the carved foam and I put it all together using hot glue and added a skin with spandex fabric like on the neck, back, and shoulders.

Once this was all done i began the painting process with the DAP Latex Caulk, acrylic paint, and Ammonia mixture. I cannot stress enough that if you try this do it in a well ventilated area to avoid passing out or loosing much needed brain cells. As you can see in the pictures it covered far better than I could have imagined. I also made sure not to cover the entire suit so that it could bend and flex without tearing (or with as minimal as possible).

IMG_20140826_131500_030.jpgHere is a pic of me painting the suit with the "Latex" mix I made. My garage door was open and I used a bandanna (Very safe) to prevent breathing in so many fumes.

While the suit dried (I admit I was excited and had a wild hair up my backside), I decided to airbrush the details on the helmet. Before airbrushing, I added a couple layers of grey Plasti-Dip spray paint to the helmet. This gave the helmet more shine and an added layer of protection. What if I meet Spider-Man! I also added a mix of acrylic whites and browns to the horns to make them more pronounced. I painted the eyes black as well. I was going for a fight look, light the Rhino has seen some battles.

After the suit dried, I added Plasti-Dip grey like before and detailed the costume with an air brush and homemade mix of acrylic paint and water (water brakes down acrylic if you didn't know that already).

You may not be able to see this, but there is a zipper in the back so that I can get in and crotch so that I can use the loo. Last year I could not and I almost passed out.

I made hands for the suit using gloves I bought from home depot, then plasti dipped grey. I may not have mentioned that throughout this project I used hot glue to make veins much like on these gloves.

I moved to the feet and did the same procedure as the helmet. This year I added shoes and built foam around them. Last year I walked on concrete bare foot for 10+ hours. It SUCKED! I wrapped them in chunks of cloth and painted them with the "Latex" mixture I made and plasti-dip grey.

I followed this up by painting toe nails, then adding shading and detail with the airbrush.

AND now for the Finished product.......................

The costume stands over 7 Feet tall with the horn (gotta watch dome overhangs). I had to mod the back muscles/ and hump last minute or it just would not have looked right. I was going for a strong neck and back area similar to one in the newer comics and Amazing Spider-Man cartoons. To me, this is was Paul Giamatti should have looked like in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

In all then project took over 60 hours to complete. But, I was notified last night that I made it to the Semi-finals of the costume contest at PCC Kansas City. More importantly, it gives me confidence that the fans are gonna love it, young and old alike.

I would like to give a quick thanks to my wife Cassandra who has helped and supported me immensely through this project. Without her I could not have done it. Love you babe.

I would also like to give a big thanks to my best friend Todd (aka The HULK) for his help and support in this project.

Lastly, thanks to all all of you, the fans and fellow Cosplayers who have helped and supported me through this process. Thank you all for reading. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or reply.

You Sir are a true craftsman! I really need you to build a styrofoam wall and video yourself busting through it. I can sleep well once I see this

Omg. When I clicked on this I was expecting some modern version of the Rhino (ala Spider-Man 2). Was I ever more than pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. This is one of the best cosplay outfits I have ever seen on this site. I'm am absolutely blown away. Total congratulations on a fantastic piece of work!
