ok I thought as Indy was looking for the ark and took abners journal with him would it make sense that he would make notes him self so I've created a few additional entries - but looking for pics to add - hand drawings - headpiece front and back, The ark, well of souls and map room (as seen in Lost Journal) - here what I've got so far - please feel free to honestly comment i mean it ...

July 16th 1936 – Marshall College, Connecticut
Marcus bought two Army intelligence agents to see me today. They had intercepted a communique from Cairo to Berlin believed to be sent by Abner Ravenwood. The Nazis, in their quest for occult power, are searching for my old mentor, who is the leading expert on the ancient Egyptian city of Tanis and possesses the headpiece of an artifact called the Staff of Ra.
The Nazis are searching for Tanis because it is believed to be the location of the Ark of the Covenant, the biblical chest built by the Israelites to contain the fragments of the Ten Commandments. The Nazis believe that if they acquire it, their armies will become invincible. The Staff of Ra, meanwhile, is the key to finding the Well of Souls, a secret chamber in which the Ark is buried. I was consulted because I have had past dealings with Ravenwood, and I have been asked to investigate the Nazi dig and to recover the Ark before the Nazis.

July 27 th 1936 - Nepal
I got here only to find that Ravenwood had died. Although we lost contact I will miss him. The headpiece was in the possession of his daughter, Marion, my embittered former lover.
I offered to buy the headpiece for three thousand dollars, plus two thousand more when we returned to the States but Marion refused. She always was stubborn, Marion's tavern “the Raven Bar” was suddenly raided by a group of thugs commanded by a Nazi agent named “Toht” a particularly nasty person. The tavern was burned down in the ensuing fight, during which Toht burnt his hand on the searing hot headpiece when he tried to grab it.
Marion and I managed to escape with the headpiece, with Marion declaring that she would accompany me in the search for the Ark so I can repay the debt.

July 29 th 1936 - Katmandu - Nepal
I contacted Sallah an old friend who is going to meet us in Cairo. He has information relating to the dig there.

August 1st 1936 - Cairo – Egypt
We have travelled to Cairo where we are staying with Sallah, who I can tell thinks there’s something going on with us. So what! ten years later and she still looks great, better even, Sallah was hired by the nazis because he is a skilled excavator, and has been given his own team and thus has learned that Belloq and the Nazis, led by Colonel Dietrich, are currently digging for the Well of Souls with a replica of the headpiece modeled after the scar on Toht's hand.

August 2 nd 1936 - Cairo – Egypt
Today in a local bazaar, Nazi operatives attempted to kidnap Marion. I chased them and after killing a Arab sword-master with my gun, she dies in an explosion. I could not get to her in time, I can’t even think about what Abner would do if he were still here, All I can do is get this thing finished and get the hell out of here as soon as I can. I’ve never been so grateful for good Egyptian liquor.

August 3rd 1936 - Cairo – Egypt
I have taken the headpiece to an old Iman to be translated - the front of the medallion reads
“ TEETAMAH QAMATO ”
This means that “you should fear its existence” – a warning not to disturb the Ark – but in the old tongue could also imply “SIX KADAM” – 72 inches.
But the back reads “KABEL YAHWEH VE HA MEESHKAN AMAH ARHAT NE AL KADAM” – which Translates as “take back one kadam to honor the hebrew god, whose ark this is”…
This means that the staff is 60 inches or five feet - Belloqs staff is too long!.
Sallah and I realized that the Nazis have miscalculated the length of the Staff of Ra and the location of the Well of Souls. Using this to our advantage, we infiltrate the Nazi dig and use the Staff of Ra to determine the location correctly and uncover the Well of Souls, Glad I bought this journal now.

August 4 th 1936 - Tanis – Egypt
Today I found the well of Souls which was filled with snakes. I hate Snakes, I managed to fend off the snakes and acquires the Ark, but Belloq, Dietrich and the Nazis arrived to take it. They tossed Marion into the well with me and sealed us in, but we managed to escape.

August 5 th 1936 – Cairo – Egypt
So, after discovering Marion is alive, being entombed in the Well of Souls, performing a fistfight with a giant Nazi mechanic, blowing up a Nazi flying wing on the airstrip, and chasing down a convoy of trucks, I take back the Ark before it can be shipped to Berlin. Busy day!
Sallah managed to secure transport for us.
On board a tramp steamer to England, Marion and I leave Cairo to escort the Ark.
The Captain “Katanga” has taken a shine to Marion and has “loaned” her a very stunning dress. Not sure of his intentions though. Unfortunutly the next morning, our boat was boarded by Belloq, Dietrich and the Nazis, who once again stole the Ark and kidnapped Marion. That’s twice now, I’m beginning to really hate those guys.
I somehow stowed away on their U-boat and followed them to an isolated island in the Aegean Sea. Glad they never submerged! I think Belloq plans to test the power of the Ark before presenting it to Hitler.
After following them into the hills I threatened to destroy the Ark with a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, but Belloq called my bluff, knowing I could not bear to eradicate an important historical artifact like the Ark. So I reluctantly surrendered and I was eventually tied to a post with Marion above where Belloq planned the ceremony . As Belloq performed the ritual, he recited this prayer in Aramaic as he opened the Ark which to me appears to contain nothing but sand. ( I Think it was the last thing he ever said !!!!)
Translation – “Not in humans do I trust - And not on any child of God do I rely - In him (who) God is true - A whose Torah is true - In him I will trust - And to his name holy presious praise.” -
Suddenly, “spirits” or “Ghosts” resembling Old Testament Seraphim emerged from the Ark. I had a bad feeling about this and something told me to be wary of looking at the opened Ark. I warned Marion to close her eyes. And we missed most of the action thankfully, - The apparitions suddenly morphed into "Angels of death",
Not sure exactly what happened next but judging by the remains and sounds etc. I pieced this together - lightning bolts began flying out of the Ark, gruesomely killing the Nazi soldiers, while Belloqs head exploded, Dietrich and Toht melted, meeting an even more gruesome end. The fires rose into the sky, then fell back down to Earth and the Arks lid closed with a crack of thunder.With a loud thud our bonds were somehow cut and we were free, well as free as you can be on an island full of nazis. Luck was with us and we miraculously somehow managed to find a small fishing boat willing to take us and the Ark to Greece.

August 24 th 1936 – Washington DC,
After being debriefed and almost interrogated Back in Washington, D.C., the Army intelligence agents told Brody and I that the Ark "was someplace safe” to be studied by "top men". The Ark is an important archeological artifact and belongs in a museum.


1957 – Area 51 – Final notes
Found the Ark Again !!!! In reality, the Ark was sealed in a wooden crate labeled "top secret" and stored in a giant government warehouse in Area 51 filled with countless similar crates. I’ll have to make a return trip to find out what else is in there!

Sorry, I had meant to comment last night and thank you for putting these together, then got busy with other stuff and didn't get back in here.

IMO what would be really neat is a group effort to put together the entire notebook. Choosing one font that everyone would use and several people doing a few pages. Having some basic outlines on the drawing styles, grammar, etc. Just to keep things pretty much uniform.

Sound feasible?

yea that's cool - we already got Abners entries which we can get no problem - but we would have to speak to Brain Babich to see if we can get permission to use Wayne Millers Diary, you can purchase a copy here,

we would also have to decide on drawings, inserts etc, some inserts are already sorted out such as Belloqs plan of the well of souls, (sorry map room) a Photo of the Headpiece, the US Intelligence Telegram about Tanis and Abner, The Bible Page, Pan Am Ticket to Katmandu, Photo of Marion & Sallah. I have all the mentioned inserts so I could get those sorted out no problem, also if anyone has the "Lost Journal" then there are a few great drawings in there we could use (that's where I got a little of the text from)

but more importantly I would like to keep the work out of the forum until we are ready to release it - there are a few exceptions for example we would have to talk to Indy Magnoli, Holt and a few others on COW and DD28 and a few others on here for help, so I would like to limit the amount of people involved to around 5-8 otherwise it gets complicated to control - that way each person can have a slice of the pie so to speak - from when Indy and Marcus talks to the Intelligence agents in ROLA to the beginning of KOCS we need to refine what i've already done.

If we do it I would still like it to be additional notes in the original Diary - and i've we're lucky someone could "do a run of the whole things for us" '

These are fantastic entries for the Journal!
I think this could be good also for a Indy personal journal, just like the one in Magnoli's website or just like our "Memoirs of Indiana Jones", but text is perfect and story too!

I can't wait to read more!

I'll keep you updated with developments and hope I can get a few members together to develop the idea and put something together not only for all the other members here but those at COW and mostly to honor Wayne and Brian who got me started. I did think of doing something similar for the other movies too but I'd have to include Atlantis and a few others which I'm not that familiar with plus I'm not that good at drawing - :lol

EDIT:

Umm thought about it a bit and I'd have to start with TOD to KOTCS with everything in between. I can do the text no problem, but would need help with the inserts, drawings, maps etc.

any takers on the help ?????

My only advice is that I would tone down the entries a bit. Although we're all obsessed with Indy diaries, it's very easy to make it a little too "Dear Diary". He's a man of action, so the fewer words you have, the better, in my opinion.

A few detailed points about your entries: the sub does submerge (he fastens himself to the periscope with his bullwhip)... not sure how much detail you want to put, but at least change it to something like "I'm glad they kept the periscope up!".

According to the Lost Journal (ie, according to me) Indy knows to keep his eyes shut during the Ark opening because of an article on the Ark in a book he read (presumably on the flight to Nepal or perhaps while he was waiting for Marcus to give him the thumbs up).

Just a few things to consider. Good luck with this project!

For what it's worth, I agree with Indy Magnoli.

I'm all for adding Indy's notes to the Ravenwood journal (and actually don't we see him scribbling notations in the journal when he's locating the Map Room??) but I think the entries would be more along the lines of info on Indy's further research of the Ark rather than a rehash of his daily adventures.

Just my opinion, its your project so have at 'er.

I am sure Indy would have scribble notes in the margins and added information to further his search. I believe we see him writing the coordinates he got from the Map Room in to the notebook/journal. He also referenced or translated the glyphes on the floor with notes he had in the book.

Anything is possible. This sounds like a fun project. I never was able to get a copy of Sarednab's Indy journal and was going to try and get one of Abner's. Can never have enough diaries and journals.

The name Tanis is the Greek, and the modern name of Ṣân the Arabic, form of the ancient Zān or Zoān (Psalm lxxviii. 12). The scriptural name is the same as that given to the place by the Egyptian monuments. A statue found here, and now preserved at Bûlâḳ, for example, bears an inscription to the effect that the dignitary it represents was ‘a governor in his town, a magnate in his province, and a prefect of the towns of the field of Tān’ (i.e.) Zān or Zoān). The Semitic inhabitants also called the town T’ar, i.e. Zar, and the Egyptians named it T‘a or Za (or Zor, plur. Zoru, signifying ‘a fortified place’), while the sacred name was Khont-ab, or Mesent, the place of Horus and of Phœnix, and the Edfu of the north Tanis was the capital of the fourteenth nome of Lower Egypt, and lay on the arm of the Nile named after it, the modern Mu‘izz Canal, with which many ancient legends are associated.

[[ Brugsch identifies Tanis with the Ramses of the Bible (comp. p. 413), and suppose it to have been the town where Moses wrought his miracles before Pharaoh (Ramses II.), and from which the Israelites started on their wanderings. Thus it was by this arm of the river that the body of Typhon (Seth), when slain by Osiris, floated down to the sea. On this account the Tanitic arm of the Nile is said to have been an object of hatred to the Egyptians, but it is more probable that their dislike was caused by the fact that Seth, under the name of Ba‘al, was worshipped on its banks by the natives of the district. Among the other gods specially revered here were Ammon of Thebes, with Khunsu and Muth, Tum neb-On, or lord of Heliopolis, and Horus along with Isis and Sokar Osiris. The favourite deities, however, were Tum and Khunsu, the god of the moon, who in one of his aspects was identified by the Greeks with their Heracles. The Egyptian priests who performed the rites of the ‘gods of Ramses’ in this town, are also called by the monuments Khar-tot, or ‘warriors’, a name which is identical with the Hebrew name Kharṭummîm given in the Bible to the Egyptian magicians who attempted to imitate the miracles wrought by Moses (Exodus viii, ix).

We learn from the Bible (Numbers xiii. 22) that Tanis was founded seven years later than Hebron, which, however, is mentioned as having been a very ancient place as early as the time of Abraham. This notice of the place was perhaps copied into the sacred writ of the Israelites from some earlier Phœnician work. At all events it is probable that it was founded so far back as the primæval monarchy by Phœnician mariners, and that it then lay much nearer to the sea than at the present day. The mud of the Nile has formed the broad piece of land which separates the site of Tanis from Lake Menzaleh. In the Sethroitic nome, adjacent to Tanis, lay Heracleopolis (pp. 87, 412), the cradle of the kings of the 9th and 10th Heracleopolite Dynasties, monarchs of foreign origin, who reigned in Lower Egypt until expelled by the 11th and 12th Dynasties. Monuments were erected at Tanis by Amenemha and Usertesen (p. 87), but a statue of the 13th Dynasty found here may have been brought from elsewhere at a later period. When the Hyksos overran Egypt, they found at Tanis a population of a race kindred to their own. While Abaris (Hauâr), on the E. frontier of the empire, formed the basis of their military operations, they constituted Tanis their capital. Here they employed Egyptian artists, who executed sculptures for them in the conventional style, faithfully pourtraying the features of their conquerors (p. 298). After the expulsion of the Hyksos. Tanis was neglected by the Egyptian kings, but it was again specially favoured by the great monarchs of the 19th Dynasty. Seti I., Ramses II., and Merenptah, the Pharaoh of the Exodus, frequently held their courts here, and even condescended to participate in the rites of Seth peculiar to the place. At the same time they embellished the city so liberally, and promoted its prosperity so effectually, that it is described by several papyri as being a particularly beautiful and pleasant place, and the name is therefore written ‘the beautiful, the agreeable’, by later writers. In the time of Isaiah and Ezekiel (8th and 6th cent. respectively) Zoan must still have been a very important place. ‘Surely the princes of Zoan are fools, the counsel of the wise counsellers of Pharaoh is become brutish’ (Isaiah xix. 11). Before this period the city had surrendered to the armies of the Assyrians, as we also learn from the cuneiform inscriptions, which mention Tanis in the time of Sardanapalus as Sanu, and its prince Pu-tu-bis-ti (Petubastes). Under the 26th Dynasty, which favoured foreigners, Zoan again prospered; but in the reign of Amasis, who patronised Saïs and the Greek Naucratis in preference to Tanis, Mendes, and Bubastis, the half-Semitic cities of the Delta, it began to decline perceptibly, although slowly.

A titular see, suffragan of Pelusium in Augustamnica Prima, capital of the fourteenth district of Lower Egypt. Tanis (in Egyptian Zani, in Hebrew Zoan) was situated on a branch of the Nile, to which it gave its name. It was one of the oldest cities in the world, as the Bible bears witness (Numbers 13:23), and hieroglyphic inscriptions attest its existence under Pharao Pepi I Merira of the sixth dynasty. It flourished especially under the pharoas of the twelfth dynasty, under the Hyksos, or shepherd kings (fifteenth to seventeenth dynasties), under the pharoas of the nineteenth, twenty-first, and twenty-third dynasties, who had made Tanis their capital. It was under the shepherd kings that the Jews installed themselves in Egypt in the land of Gessen, near Tanis, and it is in this city which was the residence of Rameses II, that Moses and Aaron performed many wonders (Pa. lxxvii, 12 and 43). It is a mistake to confound Tanis with the Ramesses built by the Israelites (Exodus 1:10 and 11) and situated very probably at Tell-Rotab. The Prophet Isaias (xix, 11-13; xxx, 4) denounced Tanis and the Jewish politicians who had recourse to its kings; so too Ezechiel (xxx, 14 and 18), who announced its approaching destruction. Jeremias, who also pronounced (ii, 16) anathemas against the city, was forced to follow the Jews thither after the conquest of Palestine by Nabuchodonosor (Jeremiah 43:7-10; 44:1; 46:14). In these last passages however the Bible uses Thacphanes or Thaphanhes, in Latin Taphnes, and it is not absolutely certain that this is the same as Tanis, some identifying Taphnes with Tell Dafaneh, about seventeen miles from San or Tanis. The earliest Bishop of Tanis is Eudæmon, a Melitian bishop at the beginning of the fourth century. Mention may be made also of Hermion, bishop in 362; Apollonius, present at the Robber Synod of Ephesus and Paul in 458. Besides these Le Quien speaks of eight Jacobite bishops (Oriens ******., II, 535-38), the last of whom lived in 1086. About 870 the French monk Bernard visited Tanis, "in qua sunt christiani multum religiosi, nimia hospitalite ferventes" (Tobler and Molinier, "Itinera hierosolymitana", I, 313). At the present time Tanis is a poor village called San el Haggar containing 1570 inhabitants, near Lake Menzaleh. The ruins, situated about twenty minutes distance, consist of a large temple, a small granite temple, and of other monuments not identified.

This might make some flavorful introductory text.

Could use a little editing down, though.

Tanis, Flinders Petrie, 1889:

"Copy fair what Time hath blurred; Redeem truth from his jaws " - Herbert.

Beyond the civilized regions of Egypt, past even the country palm groves where a stranger is rarely seen, there stretches out to the Mediterranean a desolation of mud and swamp, impassable in winter and only dried into impalpable salt dust by the heat of midsummer. To tell land from water, to say where the mud ends and the lakes begin requires a long experience; the flat expanse as level as the sea, covered with slowly drying salt pools, may be crossed for miles with only the dreary changes of dust black mud, water and black mud again; which it is impossible to define as more than water or more water than land. The objects which break the flatness of the barren horizon are the low mounds of the cities of dead; these alone remain to show that region was once a living land whose people prospered on the earth. The reddened top of the highest of these mounds may be seen rising out of the haze on the horizon some hours before it is reached; that is the great city of San, the capital of Lower Egypt. And when the traveller has climbed the crackling heaps of potsherds which cover its mouldering houses, he sees around him towns whose modern names are not in books and whose ancient history is still buried in their ruins …

San, Tanis, T'aan, Zoan, these forms of the name have each a history of a different age and a different race ….

T'aan, the city of Sheshonk, of Pisebkhanu, of the usurping Si-amen, and of the magnificent egotist Ramessu II, is still unknown to us and we can only yet imagine what interest may await us when we reach the dwellings of the people who lived around the splendid temple which lies in the midst of the mounds. This temple, a thousand feet from end to end, stood up above the surrounding houses; and over its long fiat roof towered up the colossal statue of the second founder of the city, the great Ramessu, head, shoulders and body even above everything else, with stony eyes gazing across the vast plain. This temple was worthy of the capital of Lower Egypt, replete with noble statues of the older kings of the most magnificent work, and dominated in every part by the royal splendour of the Smiter of Nations, the Strong Bull, the Destroyer of His Enemies, Ramessu, Beloved of Amon.

The earliest knowledge of San that we at present have, is in the well known statement in the Book of Numbers (xiii. 22), that Hebron was built seven years later than Zoan. This coupling of it with a Palestinian city shows that the building must refer to a settlement by Shemites, and not by Egyptians; and considering the age of Hebron, it probably refers to the settlement before the eleventh dynasty.

WOW thanks for the info guys and a Big Thanks to MIKE J for all the info - that will really make a difference and gives me a lot to work on.

Indy Magnoli - thanks for the comments, I actually thought the same thing but as Abners text is text heavy I decided to do the same - but my "new" version which will be more of a "re-due" of the lost journal but a bit more info and some inserts thrown in will be on a similar line as the "Grail Diary" - I'll be in touch when I've worked out what I'm going to do and what Info, drawings etc I'm going to "borrow" from it so I can get permission from the right people and as you were heavily involved i hope you don't mind me asking you who they were - also could you PM me and let me know what was on the torn pages that's been bugging me since I bought it - :lol

OK that's what I have so far I have got some pretty good notes on most of the stuff except FOA, and IM which I can get from you-tube and other sources, inserts are will sort themselves out as we go - its just sourcing them and getting them done (I have someone hows going to do that hopefully) - somebody else has the correct fonts which is really cool, and lastly this is going to be a big job so I think if there are no objections I'd like to temporally call it a "A New Updated Version of the Lost Journal of Indiana Jones"

also I would like to keep the actual text, drawings etc. under raps until finished - but put a few "tasters" up now and again to keep everyone informed and to "bump" the thread - :lol

Another thing to think about is do we keep it digital or a real hard copy like Sarendabs Memoirs and Magnolis Grail Diary?

I got the fonts needed thanks to DBCooper for the info I managed to find them all had to pay for one but that's ok - also watched Fate of Atlantis on YouTube I forgot how much humour there was in it - anyway I've got a good Idea of whats needed to cover that particular story - so onto the Infernal Machine which I have no Idea about, I'm going to enjoy doing this

I'll Start a new thread ... unless the Mods can change the name of this one to "New Lost Journal" development project

let me know also is there anyway that we could set up a thread that only members involved in the creation can post (like Premium Members) in until we have completed the project thus allowing us to keep in touch with what everyone else is doing. rather than with emails and forwarding etc...
