Repainting Two NECA - GREMLiNS 2: Gremlin Stunt Puppet Prop Replicas (Brown + Green Variant)

That is truly amazing. Your painting skills make me very jealous. I assume you airbrushed these guys ? I'm new to this forum, but I would be interested in getting a quote some time.

I am currently working on a handpuppet gizmo, but have a gremlin on order taht may need a repaint. Will study your brilliant work me thinks

:) Andy

Thanks,
I painted my gremlin with regular brushes. I've never tried airbrushing, but would love to have a try at it some time. I think Mike is using airbrushing on he's green repaints, and I'm excited to see how it compares to one solely done with brushes. The transitions should be easier to do that way, I spent a lot of time of mixing lighter and darker tones to get that effect.

Congrats on getting that gremlin soon, and if you decide to repaint it, be sure to post some pics.

man this makes me not even want to get the neca one now since it makes it look like crap lol.

I'll take that as a compliment, thanks! :cool

If you want one, but just don't like the paintjob NECA did, and have little painting experience yourself - I can only recommend getting one of Mike's (KreationX) repaints. He does great stuff.

They're coming along nicely I think, just saw the update with the brown spots. Great work Mike! :thumbsup

Got my custom made aluminum plaque from Pastor Jedi yesterday!

The white text and logos were supposed to be aluminum in color, but it actually looks great this way. (the details look a bit blurry in this quick mobile shot, but it's really crisp and very close to the vector-design I made) :thumbsup

..Now I just need to find a way to attach it to the stand..

Does anyone know of a good place to get steel or aluminum plaques made?
I've looked at a few online plaque shops, but wanted to hear if someone here could recommend a place. I've made these in InDesign/Illustrator, still need to make a few adjustments, but they're vector-based and should be a walk in the park to produce.

Thanks
Love those plaques, Would love to get some for my Stunts.

SankaraRaider, did you seal the acrylic paint with anything? Being that these are latex, won't the acrylic paint crack and peel over time?

Hi,

Nope didn't seal it with anything. I thought about giving it a clear coat afterwards, but was afraid I might screw up and ruin the paint job by doing so, so I just left it like that. The acrylic paint seems quite 'flexible' and the layers of paint are thin in most places, so I don't think it will be a problem - but then again, I've never painted something like this before so it's hard for me to say.

Any experience with acrylics on latex/rubber? and what would you recommend sealing it with?

Thanks

sankara,

i used it on mine, and its super flexible.

thanks
mike :)

Hey Mike, I really could use help with glass eyes. I know you mentioned you were making several of these to sell . Is there ANY way I can get a set to put in mine?

great paintjobs, for painting latex a liquid latex/acrylic basecoat is best 50/50 mix
seal with liquitex gloss and gel medium, or matte medium for a matte finish

Great job on the repaint ShankaraRaider! Much more realistic! Would be cool if NECA did another version of a Gremlin, but did a better job on the paint (unlikely). At least you could give it justice.

I've got one of these still in the box. Number 499.

My wife bought it for me months ago as a Christmas/birthday present, so I've just been staring at the unopened shipper for ages.

Hope I'm not too disappointed in their paint job now, but the one you did is excellent!

I was glad we ordered when we did, because Entertainment Earth raised their price by $60 or $70 between the time we checked out and the day it arrived a week later.

Thanks a lot Frosty!! :cool
Every piece of advice is much appreciated.

I'll have to look into that, and find out if any of that stuff is available over here.

Thank you Jay! :)

Yeah would be cool if they did a biiiit better with painting these, but I think the price would go up considerably if they did.

The green ones that came out recently was done a tiny, tiny bit better, but still not perfect. The next puppet replica they're releasing 'Greta' from Gremlins 2, is a bit of a disturbing puppet in itself, and the paintjob is a bit off - certainly not one I'm gonna pick up.

But I think that it's extremely cool that they're making these replicas - Just hoping for some of the cooler variants in the future.

Congrats on getting one of these Alex, and thanks!
Too bad you can't pull him out of that ugly shipper just yet.. :)

It's hard to say if you'll be disappointed when you get to see it - I know of some people who were perfectly happy with the Neca paint job, and wouldn't change a thing - I, myself, just felt an enormous need to make him look his absolute best and resemble what I saw in the movie.

Yeah I'm happy I got mine from EE too, before the price went up - I had to pay quite a lot in shipping expenses and import-taxes, so it helped a bit that the puppet itself wasn't that expensive.
