Removing chrome from a Roman's Obi emitter

Should I just sand this thing down or use a chemical of some kind. And what king of metal is underneath? Sorry if this is a silly question. I'm learning as I go.

Thanks

Dan

Why? Could you not trade it against a aluminum version? There are people who would rather have one of these.

I believe it is made of chrome-plated aluminum. Underneath the chrome there is (usually) a thin layer of nickel, and underneath the nickel is a thin layer of copper.
The metal user for the original balance pipe was a chrome/nickel alloy, but it was not as shiny. Maybe a more accurate finish (more so than aluminum) could be obtained just by dulling the chrome somehow, but I am not sure.
Nickel can be darkened using "gun blue" liquid. Not sure about chrome, though.

Thanks for the response Darth Lars. I suppose I could trade it if anyone is interested but it's one of his previous runs and I'm not sure of the interest. I was planning on weathering it which is why I want to get rid of the chrome and heard of something called aluminum black that worked well. Though, if anyone has another suggestion or is interested in a trade I'm open to suggestions.

The originals have a warm grey color which you can't get by chemical treatment of chrome, and a matte machined or matte texture which may not match well if the piece was polished before chroming.

Chrome is hard stuff, not easy to take off with mechanical methods. It's best removed chemically. A plating house local to you might give you a deal on getting it off. Also if you do a search online on home chroming you may find the informatino you need for removing it--some kind of acid will be needed. You might also find a useful product at Brownell's gunsmithing supply online.

Just be careful if you do it yourself because you're going to be playing with stuff that can hurt you.
