Releasing Gas from a small CO2 canister

Hey all,

I have a box of these Airsoft air canisters that I need to empty the gas from for a few projects. I don't own a gas airsoft to play with so what's my best bet?

Vise and nail? :lol

I honestly dont know if there is a safe way to do it other than with an airsoft or pellet gun. A nail your taking an awful risk of turning that into the pellet/BB.

back in the day, while waiting for the train to go home. We'd grind the cylinder on the concrete until a small hole developed and the air came out. If we did it really fast, the air would come out faster! It was an hour wait, we were bored a lot of the time...

A hammer and nail sounds really dangerous. If you're in a hurry, you can find cheap airsoft guns at hunting stores. If you've got to do it right now, I'd suggest using a screw instead of a nail. Drive it into wood, hold the wood and cartridge with a fixed vice or clamp (not just a pliers), and gradually turn the screw until you pierce the cartridge. This way at least there's less risk of a loose nail shooting you in the eye.

I used the vise and nail method. Chuck that thing really good and make sure the nail is aimed away from anyone/thing important, turn your head and give it a tap with a hammer. Mine made a disappointing, tiny poof.

If there 12g. co2 use one of these:

Quick Change 12 Gram 12g CO2 Adapter - eBay (item 280496302121 end time Jun-20-10 00:50:38 PDT)

or if you don't want to wait for shipping go to a local bike shop and get one of these:

Sorry for the double post, But if your gonna do this make it fun... if you get the quick change valve connect it to some 2" PVC with an end cap and ball valve, then put something (like a mini nerf football) in the PVC, pull the ball valve, and WOOOOooossshh!
it should shoot it a 150 feet.

as long as the canister isnt going to shoot off anywhere ,then a vise and a small drill bit works . There isn't alot of pressure in them only takes a few seconds for it to empty

Yeah, but even if the canister is not going anywhere the drill bit/nail most likely will go flying and can be very dangerous. and they may be small but there is a ton of pressure in them.

Well, the vise/wood/screw idea sounds feasible (yeah, i'm in a bit of a hurry, need them done for tomorrow)

Not to worry, i'm not rushing the process and will have proper safety gear on as well.

If you don't hear from me tomorrow... :D

Ive done it several times before....

open a phonebook, somewhere near the middle pages. Place the cartidge inside and close the book. Make sure the impact end is sticking out of the phone book.

Kneel on the phone book (make sure the cartridge is secure)

Firmly Hold the nail with a pair of pliers, then hit the nail into the cartridge with a hammer.

Go to your local head shop and buy a cracker. They sell them so the heads can fill their balloons with nitrous. The canisters are about the same size as CO2 canisters.

I've always emptied mine using a drywall nail. Just wear a pair of gloves and make sure you have the tip of the canister aimed away from you when you pierce it. There's no reason to make it more complicated than it really is.
