Yep, I know what you mean. And I hate to tell you that the faceplate should not be a cylinder, but a triangular prism instead.
And those lines you carved are actually a see-through grill, which look frail as hell.

And from looking this packaging the grill is quite obvious

Im going through my 3rd Vader helmet build myself, ... so I feel your pain...
