Dave

Yeah yeah, it looks nice. But are you able to do a paint job that sucks?

I dare you.

:lol
Oh yeah I can, and I do it very often ! :wacko

Thanks for your comments, here some new pics with the R5 unit (I should had a slight weathering to it I guess) !

Beautiful Julien, I only hope my big X paint job turns out as nice as this dude, top top work my friend!.

Stu

Thanks you guys !

Yeah I do like the black background, it's just what they used when they took ref pics of the models !

Stu, it should turn OK ! Hopefuly you wont have to strip off the paint on a so big bird lol ! Would be a though task !

Totally amazing mate, you really put my Red 3 to shame, this is just an incredible build you've done (again) I would love to see more pics when you get a chance, it deserve's much more screen time.

That's stellar, Julien. Looks very accurate to what reference is public. Can we take the 'new' details of your paint job as canon? :D

Do you know whether R4 was actually the "other" hero/armature bird? If you can say, I know a chap who'll be very keen to know.

Thanks Guys !
Guy, you know that your Red 3 is a beauty and it's still the better X-Wing so far IMHO !

Martyn, I dont know if it's canon, but I did my best to replicate the paintjob, was not an easy task though so it's not 100% accurate !
Unfortunatly no, even if Red 4 paintjob was IMHO the best and the most detailled one that ILM did, the bird was a pyro model, no doubt on that and it probably blew up !

Thanks for the advice, Julien.

I doubt there'll be many people in a position to challenge you on the details so don't bother being modest, just claim it's 100%, ha ha. :)

So regrettable that some (all?) of the high-quality "quasi-pyros" were blown up, isn't it!

Lol Martyn no it's not 100%, one thing comes to mind, my yellow is not quite right and I dont know why ! Ill try to correct that !

Yes that's a shame when we see in comparison Red Leader, its paintjob is not spectacular :s Red 12 was also an awesome pyro !

Ah, just fib about it. :D Your yellow looks pretty good. Floquil or custom?

I agree, Red 1 is still a fave but by comparison...I'm also a big fan of the pyro Red 3 and Red 6...

Thanks guys :)

The yellow is a custom mix, there are too many yellow floquil which could work, I didnt want to waste my time (and money) to try them all since it's not available here in France.

Yeah Red 3 is a great bird, as for Red 6 beside the red canopy frame I dont know so much, I havent seen any clear pic of it (side views, top and bottom) ! I dont even no if those pics exist !

MonsieurTox your Red Four is one of the best X-Wings I've ever seen - and it works! Congratulations! It deserves to be photographed extensively against a nice star background, or in action. If I lived near your area I would be honored to take high-res digital pictures of it against a green or black background and then superimpose it on other backgrounds. I've also seen your website - very cool.

I'm still a newbie here and I'd to ask you: do we know for sure that Red Four was a hero and not a Pyro? (To me it's always been a tossup between Red Four and Red Six, the others being 1, 2, 3 and 5). And the markings - may I ask you about your sources of information for the markings?

Sorry if this has been discussed before - if you could just point me in the right direction or give me an idea of which threads to read - any info. greatly appreciated - thanks!

Thanks ILMwannabe,

Yeah I should take better pic of it. It's not finished so as I plan to repaint the canopy and nose cone and maybe tweak a bit the weathering !

Yeah it was a pyro, that's 100% sure :

- fuselage with same chips pattern as the other pyro

- wing mounting

- engines cast ine one piece (turkey feathers included). Same mold lines on the 4 engines, and it's not straight running from the turkey feather to the point where they meet the Saturn V cans. Same mold line can be seen on the other pyro engines.

- solid wings with the same chips patterns. Upper right wing and lower left wing are identical, upper left and lower right wings are identical. We can notice some airbubbles on the lower left wing !

- the nose cone cant be removed unlike the hero noses.

- R2 strip socket different from the hero birds but the same as the pyros.

- Sealab parts on the wings are typically pyro assembly (as they're cast with the wings). Glued a different way on the hero models.

Some more styrene chips were added to the fuselage and wings to make it a bit more unique !

It's the only one X-Wing with an R4 unit (maybe why the R4 unit is called R4 since it comes from Red 4 :p)

The decals come from the Harrier or Phantom, I cant remember, but I wasnt able to find 3 of the decals. All the other ones are the right ones !

Ive never seen pics of Red 4 under construction, Ive only identified Red 12 while being painted (the other yellow-canopy X-Wing).

Ill add, Red 4 has been photographed sans paint too cementing further she's 100% pyro, you can spot the "tell" by the chip in the wing bro, cant recall which, but there is a bit of a ding in one of the trailing edges in a thread posted here an age ago!

Yes you're right about the damaged trailing edge, it's on the upper right wing !
