Recon Helmet ((O)) Foam Mat Build ((O))

I started an ODST Build, and decided halfway that I wanted my set to have the Recon helmet. SO, I started tonight using some pep files, thanks to Belakor for those, and filling in any gaps on my own.

I am still getting used to foam mat and how it works, so please forgive my terrible cuts and awful glue job. LMK what you think.

looks good to me man, I can definitely tell it's a Recond helmet just by looking at it even unfinished.. So you must be doing it right.

You can haz reconz. Great job man, I don't have enough patience to do anything this difficult :lol.

haha, I don't think I'll drown it in gas and run around for a few minutes...I want to enjoy it for a while. Thanks for the positive feedback. It's actually not that difficult...anyway. More pics soon.

I loved the Recon Helmet in Halo 3. As of right now, I can't stand it in Reach because of the attachments. I REALLY wish they'd get rid of the Rank Cap already.

Nice dude, Keep it up!

thanks, yeah...as Bungie's last game under the HALO liscense...I was disappointed. Sorely dissapointed. The story was good, and followed the books for the most part, but I didn't get the experience or pleasure I got from beating HALO:CE or HALO:2. Anyway...I love recon, and now I can haz...Warcft says so.

Yes, yes you can. I've wanted to make that helmet forever just to say this,
"You may haz Reconz in teh gaem, but I can haz teh Reaconz in real lief!"

Excuse the poor spelling, just trying to act like the little kids that were begging for it at 1 time.

Ok, so...I won't make it in time for Haloween. Any way, here is a treat, I still lack some on the sides as you can tell. It fits big, because I didn't account for the foam thickness compared to cardstock thickness...so when I used pep cut outs as templates against the foam...it made the helmet bigger.

Ozark Trail Camping mat. My local walmart carries it. I think they are going to phase it out though, there is another roll of "camping mat" it's thinner, but has "comfort pillows", and is more expensive. So buy, up you never know...

You say it's big, it looks perfectly fine when you wear it. Nice job, I wanna see it finished.

It feels big, perhaps I'm wee-headed. Anyway, I left it in the car during church yesterday...and well...fail sauce. The glue joints on the crown let go, and a couple on the jaw line. I'll put up some pics as soon as I get her put back together and finish the area around the visor. I plan on sealing and putting some paint on this week, and hopefully getting the visor cut and tinted. Thanks for the compliments guys.

Please tell me you didn't use hot glue and leave it in a hot car. If you did.... *sigh*, I suppose it coulda been worse. If not, forget what I said, but never leave anything glued in the heat. EXTREMELY horrible idea. My friend ruined a helmet by doing that. It was covered in resin and only partially fiberglassed. In the heat, whatever wasn't fiberglassed, warped. With what you're doing, the helmet could come apart like it did.

simple reply to that....yes, yes I did...facepalm. Anyway, it was in such shambles that I decided to start another build as I rebuilt the old. Instead of cutting individual pieces, I made a few pieces one solid piece, to help cut down on horrible ugly glue joints. I learned my lesson, I do not leave my helmet in the hot car. So, this "new" helmet looks, nearly 100% better that the old. Shade, I deserve a virutal slap to the back of the head. Now, to prevent this from happening again, I'm taking a few extra steps.

The inside of my helmet will get another layer of foam, maybe not foam but some kind of comfortable material, to make it fit correctly. So, after I make a glue joint and it's dried...I come back from the inside and pretty much put a weld on the inside. In some places I'll be putting small steel wire inside the foam and using it as a means to hold certain pieces together and to also allow me to manipulate it how I want.

We all make mistakes now and again. My friend learned the hard way. Only reason I know is thanks to Neo and it's only because he's made that mistake at some point.

More pictures tonight, I've got more than this done, just this is all I've taken pics of. As you can tell, much smoother than Recon 1.0. Anyway, this one will not go into my car, ever...until it's done and on my head.

Looks good so far. I can't find these blue foam mats anywhere. the only ones walmart here had were crappy and textured with those comfort pillows and only had one. I'd love to find this stuff for my halo costume otherwise i'm going to be using blue insulation foam.
