Recommendations for stamp-pad ink on wood surface?

I need to imprint a wood surface using an inked rubber stamp and I am unsure what kind of ink to get.

The surface is unfinished wood and I am planning to apply a stain, then apply the stamp, then add a clear coat.

Can anyone recommend a type of ink that will work well on wood and will not smear or run when clear-coated?

Considering the wide range of experiences among this group, I am thinking someone here may have experience that could help guide me.

Instead of putting ink on the stamper, why not put paint?

Now that is a really, really good idea.

Funny how obvious it sounds after hearing it. :unsure
