I'm looking for some inspiration. Could you recommend some really good scifi and/or adventure films from the 40's-60's? Thanks in advance.

Plan 9 from Outerspace.

It's good in the fact that it was the plan that actually worked.

Off the top of my head (and these are all pretty obvious choices) I'd strongly recommend:

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Robinson Crusoe on Mars

Forbidden Planet

The Thing (I love the Carpenter remake--which is actually a bit closer to the original source story--but the original is really great)

Village of the Damned (anything written by John Wyndham is fantastic even if some of the movie adaptations aren't--I'm looking at you Day of the Triffids!!)

Five Million Years to Earth (aka Quatermass and the Pit--and I would recommend anything written by Nigel Kneale)

Great minds think alike :cool

Added a few to my list above. Also fun are:

Island of Terror

The Day the Earth Caught Fire

Godzilla (if you haven't seen the original Japanese movie it's really good)

Earth vs the flying Saucers. Robinson Crusoe on Mars was a must whenever monstervision was on TNT in the 90s, apparently it isn't in print on dvd sadly. You can't go wrong with "Them!" from 1954. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Day of the Triffids, Invaders From Mars.

Anything Ray Harryhausen was a part of.

In fact, I feel a day of Sinbad movies are in order. 7th Voyage, Golden Voyage and Eye of the Tiger.

Some of my favs, in no particular order:

Captain Horatio Hornblower
Earth Vs The Flying Saucers
Air Force
12 O'Clock High
Conquest Of Space
Countdown
I Married A Monster From Outer Space
It Came From Outer Space
The Time Machine

If you'd like some mystery/suspense:

Rope
Dial "M" For Murder
The Thin Man series

Horror/thrillers:

Homicidal
The Tingler
Tales Of Terror
The Comedy Of Terrors
The Devil Bat
House Of Wax
House On Haunted Hill

id deffinatly recomend the origional Godzilla movie, but the japaneese version (Gojira) and not the american one where they cut the movie to about half its length and then changed the story around by filming a few scenes with new characters.

The Day the Earth Stood Still
Howard Hawks' The Thing From Another World
Producer George Pal's Destination Moon, When Worlds Collide, The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, and Conquest of Space.
Ray Harryhausen's effects work in The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (1953), Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956), and 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957), Mysterious Island (1961), First Men in the Moon (1964), One Million Years B.C. (1967) and The Valley of Gwangi (1969)
Them! (look for Aliens similarities)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
On the Beach
The Quatermass series and films
This Island Earth
Forbidden Planet (an inspiration for Star Trek)
The Angry Red Planet
First Man Into Space
It! The Terror from Beyond Space (Precursor to Alien)
Gojira
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Journey to the Center of the Earth.
2001: A Space Odyssey
Planet of the Apes
The Last Man on Earth
Planet of the Vampires
Fantastic Voyage

since the sci-fi has been covered by other members, here are some good adventure films

ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD
WAGES OF FEAR
GUNS OF NAVARONE
BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI
SEA HAWK
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA

Oh man the Green Slime was on Monstervision all the time, it's actually better than it looks.
