Recaster Alert: Yoda Necklace. Recaster apologizes and pulls auction. RPF parades!

So, last night I'm browsing Ebay, and I found this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260567702239&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I e-mail him asking if he made them and if he can make more? He replied, this morning:

"Hi, I can make more. I have several started. The one listed is the only one
ready right now. They take a little time to do. I'll post more as I finish
them.
Thanks,
Dan

I just sent him an e-mail letting him know that this is my sculpt and I've been making these for the last 10 years. These are my pics:

Not only is he using the wrong string, but he put no effort on getting the color-schemes right and getting aged side-rings. Typical recaster cutting corners. Heads-up.

Yeah I've seen this around.. He's been selling them for a while now, as i did watch it once, but decided the detail with it wasn't to my liking.. Good to know now, don't like getting items of recasters..

Re: Ebay Recaster Alert: The Yoda Necklace

My niece is a huge fan of the little guy anything Yoda related and she's interested. Do you still have them for sale and if so how much are you asking with US shipping?

I'd like to know before I call her.

Thanks,
Malc.

Lets hope he realizes the error of his ways and stops production.

Ironically, I stopped making them because the demand had fully dried out. I'd have to order certain material, but i could do a run, if enough people are interested. These used to go for $36.00 shipped world-wide.

Re: Ebay Recaster Alert: The Yoda Necklace

I'm supposing he, one day, came across this item and decided to make copies to sell, without having a way to find out where it came from.

I've sent him an e-mail to notify him this is my sculpt, who I'm, and what he is doing. I've yet to hear back. Depending on what his reply will be, I might have to open an account at prop-safe.

Re: Ebay Recaster Alert: The Yoda Necklace

If you look at the portfolio section of his website, it shows that he restored someones Yoda display statue and Yoda has the necklace. Possibly the necklace he recast.

http://www.grumeretz.com/portfolio.php?level=album&id=37

Although the pics are small, the "before restoration" Yoda necklace seems different to mines, which appears in the "After restoration" pics. Not that the Yoda looks any better after the "restoration."

Re: Ebay Recaster Alert: The Yoda Necklace

Since I'm from the Phoenix metro area I googled this guy to see if he is someone I had heard of. I don't know him. I am surprised that as an artist he copies other people work and should know how wrong that is.

Did you see this yet? His website says he
"is an avid science fiction buff".

Be sure to add this over at propsafe.

.

That's the same artist that makes the SW ackbar, hammerhead and reyes heads that Korbanth sells. Who is already listed as a recaster on propsafe.

That's gracious of you to say but still no valid excuse for making copies of your work. Recasters all over the place would be saying nonsense such as

"I have no idea who originally made this prop therefore it's perfectly okay to copy it."

which would then replace the most often used excuse that I have heard by recasters which is...

"I didn't think the original maker would mind since the copies I make of the original makers work wouldn't be as good and therefore not in as big a demand"

It's very decent of you to ask his explanation for the recasting. I just don't know what he could say to justify it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say fly off the handle with the guy. He is an artist. As an artist I look at other peoples sculpts and say "I didn't sculpt this so I can't make copies of it for money". Cut and dry situation.

My 2 cents.

Well, yeah, I agree. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, but after seeing that he is a member here, screw it.

Well, I've yet to hear back from him. Perhaps, he might want to address the issue here, in the open. That's were his messages will end-up at, anyway. Will update tittle.

We might, if he doesn't show-up here. He replied, saying that he didn't know, apologized and said he won't sell them, anymore, yet that one auction is still standing. I gave him the link to this thread and suggested he should openly explain himself, here, since he is a member.

Re: Ebay/RPF MEMBER Recaster Alert: Yoda Necklace. Attn: Grumble garage

If his identity as been confirmed on the RPF, he should be Banned as a Recaster!
