Rebuilding a FX X-Wing into a "sort of" studio scale model

Great DreamQuest image.

A number of my friends worked on The Abyss. I attended a reunion screening not long ago and, damn, the technical complexities of shooting that picture cannot be overstated. Un-freaking-believable.

Anyways, thanks for sharing -- and good luck with the X-wing build.

A little progress on this. Spent some time messing around with the droid strip area. Probably going to be the single biggest mod I'll make. The toy R2 is very oversize, and the strip itself is too wide and very short. I've already mentioned that the entire model is about 90% studio scale, so any scale parts used will likely look too big or will need some modification. I shortened the droid strip I'd gotten from one of our very generous members here by cutting and splicing in two areas near the back. Also narrowed the strip channel on the fuse with styrene, and created a new droid "socket" area. Here's a quick pic of this WIP, along with a lineup of the strips: Modified, stock studio scale and toy.

Have also started to fit a new cockpit casting into place, and have started hobbing out the canopy "glass" to create a clean frame. Still some work on that. Will post more as things progress.

That is great work you have done so far. Here is a really lousy picture that shows mine over in the corner. I need to get around to taking some good pictures sometime. I put fiber optics in the cockpit and lights in the engines.

Ah memories...! EVERYthing you describe is pretty much exactly how I did mine! :) Makes sense, though, huh?

Doing that canopy was a BEAR!
