Reasons to never buy a disc based game system when it first comes out

Says a very small percentage. Most users, myself included, haven't had any issues. My PS4's purring like a kitten.

It just strikes me as funny that so soon after they have issues. You think they'd have this tech perfected by now. My ps3 seems to have a gremlin in it and it's only a year old x.x

To be fair, the PS2 did have launch issues with the DVD drive. But back then every little problem wasn't all over the internet within seconds. But after the Xbox RROD debacle, I'm inclined to hold off until I'm sure it's safe to jump in the water.

Funny....my 30 year old Atari 2600 is still chugging along......

The only difference is that Sony and MS is cranking out replacements units significantly faster than the previous generation. Everything new like this where they're cranking out 1 million plus units will have problems.

Failure rates among the consoles are no different than any other piece of tech. In many cases, the failure rates are actually a lot lower. The problem is hype.

No one cares if you buy a new toaster and it doesn't work.. you just take it back to the store and trade it out. I actually had to sit down and think rather hard about the last piece of failed tech I had to return, and it ended up being the Blu-ray player I bought early this year. The failure meant so little to me that I literally didn't remember even having to take it back to the store until I sat down and tried to deliberately recall it.

But that new Playstation you've been pining for the last year over develops a flaw? Then it's a really big deal, with much wailing and gnashing of teeth, and you want to shout to the heavens about how horrible this tech is. Or, if not the heavens, then you'll at least shout to Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. And really, most of the general hardware failures will never get completely resolved. But once the initial hype of the system dies down, it's no longer a big deal to take it back to the store and you won't even think twice about it.

Lord Baron has a good point about the internet angle... I had a PS2 from launch day until well after I had a PS3, and I never had a single problem with it. I didn't hear about the failures until many years later, I was completely clueless of the issues during the entire time I owned the system.

When I was a kid we were always about 3-4 years behind the tech when it came to gaming. I was playing my Atari 2600 as my only console until Christmas of 1989. :lol

I'm not quite that behind now but I'm definitely not the type that needs to have the new system at launch. I'll pick up a used PS4 and XB1 in a couple of years.

Yeah, I'm the same way, I only got a PS3 2 years ago or so, and I don't expect to get a PS4 for 2 or 3 years. I tend to not buy games when they come out either, but just wait until they're $20 or less. Saves me a ton of money, I get to have more information from reviews and such about what is or isn't good, and most bugs will (hopefully) be patched by then.

I have every Nintendo console made, except the 3D Gameboy (the goggle looking one) and Wii (I have a Wii U) and they all work, never failed, never replaced. One day, I may get a PS or a Box, but right now I am happy with my Mario and DK! Yeah yeah, I know....Nintendo....:p

There's a lot of Nintendo hate out there but I love them. They've never put out a system (console that is) that isn't quality and their main franchises are the gold standard for quality in game play. What I especially like about them now is that they're DIFFERENT. If you owned a PS3 and not a 360 you weren't really missing out aside from a handful of exclusives. Same goes if you owned a 360 and not a PS3. But the Wii? Different game play, different game library, very unique. That's why it was the best selling console of that generation. Everyone I knew had EITHER a PS3 or 360 AND the Wii. My 360 gets played with 2-3 times a year for big games, my Wii gets weekly use.

The only console I'm currently interested in in the new generation is the Wii U. I will get the others but that's the only one that seems significantly different to me right now.

The graphics will get better as game makers gets better handle on the tech. Most 1st day games only slap something together to get it out. If a game is multi platform they will always be weaker causes money to produce on each system ( xbone, ps4, ps3, Xbox). I sold my ps4 for 600 cause the money was too good to pass up and none of the games caught my eye. I'll pick up one again in a few months

I bought the Nintendo wii because of all the hype and for how much it was fetching. I was initially gonna sell it but decided to keep it. The only time I ever played it was when my 360 got the RROD and I had to send it off to MS. Bad timing on my part as they were moving facilities as it took 2 months to get my refurb. As soon as I got it back though, I stopped playing the wii completely and ended up selling it to my buddy for tattoo time. He ended up selling it later as well.

I've owned the NES, SNES, and N64, but I have zero interest in the Wii.

Yup...this is my tac, wait till these next gens have gotten over any teething troubles!
The amount of xbox360s I returned within the first 12months was just ridiculous!

Plus half the time the launch games aren't anything i'm into. I miss turn based rpgs, all we get now is COD clones. I still sooo want that Titan Fall special edition but at nearly 300.00 it's half the price of a system. I don't play the wii as much as a should but once i get more games for it and the gamecube i will since i got the last model to play GC games. i collect game systems so the wii u is a good one to get plus i'm kinda bored with the other systems too.

I have an XB one and haven't had a single issue with it yet as far as hardware. I had 2 moments where the TV or 1 game suddenly exited to the dashboard, but nothing since. It's been thus far very solid. I LOVE Killer Instinct and Dead Rising 3!

I'm not sure if graphics are better as far as colors and such, but the systems allow far more AI and interactive elements than any previous system has. This allows for some insane atmospherical elements or number of enemies on screen at once. Also with the XB one some of the calculations are done in the cloud to allow more processing power for other game elements to allow for a more seamless and lesser lag experience.

Very cool. :)

I think the biggest thing on this new generation of consoles will be how much they can put on the screen, not really an improvement in resolution per se.

Apparently there's a PS4/vita bundle floating around. Microsoft is having bad press as they're banning xbox one owners from skype for bad language so apparently they shut down your skype and xb1 account. I bet that'll annoy all the 11 year olds screaming and being stupid in online games once they get reported.
