Realistic fake mustaches?

A bit of an odd request, but anyone know where I can get a really good fake mustache? Something higher quality than what you get in the costume stores.

Good topic. I tried to buy a bunch of stuff on sale after halloween and was disappointed with the costume crap.

Well, for film productions, wool hair is used. It comes in white but can be spray colored whatever you color you need, or there are specific colors available. Though time consuming, it's best to use wool hair and spirit gum. Remember that hair comes out from the skin, so you should attempt to attach any wool hair end first into the spirit gum. And when removing, remember that you're going to need spirit gum remover.

You want to use a real human hair stache with a mesh backing. It is the only way to achieve a real look. You can get them on eBay or online. I have been using the ones that are in the gold packaging for about a year for Jack Sparrow.

The reason why alot of peoples staches look fake is because they apply it right out of the bag! The stache needs to be trimmed and messed up a bit. Putting it on right out of the packaging makes it look too fake.

Not exactly. What they often use is either crepe hair, which you can buy in any costume store and it comes in many colors, and they layer it on. Very time consuming, but it looks good. They also use appliances like Savvy posted, which I personally think look better and save alot of work putting on. It basically boils down to what your production team/budget is. Often if you are on the cheap you go the crepe hair route and hope for an actor that knows how to put it on. If you have a wig team, you'll get hand tied appliances. A makeup artist will basically go with his/her preference.

That's a great resource Savvy. I'm tempted to buy a few pieces just so I can stop with the planning con costumes from hairiest on down... Obi Wan on Friday, Dracula on Saturday, then shave it all off because I had to dye it brown for Drac.

Wow... those are incredibly cheap! Thanks for the resource! Takes me almost 8 months to grow a full western-style mustache and I hate every minute of it! Now I can do it for less than $10!

I use the rubies mustaches too. I find it best to trim them to shape. and then gently rinse them so they appear more natural and less hairsprayed.

$25 minimum order. Dang...I just wanted to order a big pirate beard for $12, but I don't need anything else!

I use the Rubies too. Just goes to show you that not all the stuff Rubies makes is awful.

If you have a theatrical supply or high-end costume rental shop nearby, you should be able to find Rubies there. You will not find them at Party City, etc.

Edited to add: yes I am female, but my Sgt. Pepper costume requires a mustache. I also made a pair of eyebrows for the Wicked Witch of the West from a Rubies mustache.

/\ Ahhh! We have been invaded by a girl!!!

HOw do you apply the eyebrows for WWW? I need to figure out how to apply individual strands of hair for my Mad Hatter eyebrows coming up this Saturday!!!

Well geez, my female brain is gonna really have to think hard about how I apply my eyebrows. You know, it is just so full of fashion and gossip and hot guys....NOT:lol

To apply eyebrows over existing eyebrows, and assuming you want your own eyebrows to still be there when you take the fake ones off, you first need barrier spray. I use Mehron's. Close your eyes and spray your eyebrows. Keep your eyes closed until it dries, 'cause it burns.

You must use spirit gum to attach hair to hair. Lightly coat your eyebrows with spirit gum and let dry enough to get tacky. Dip the ends of the hair you want to use for eyebrows (I've also seen a beard done this way) and let it get tacky as well. Apply the hairs to your eyebrows, laying it in the direction you want the hair to go. You may need to tamp it down with the handle of a paint or makeup brush.

For the Mad Hatter's eyebrows, it may be worth getting some very fine mesh and creating your eyebrows on that. Trim and style. Then apply the mesh with spirit gum. It would probably be quicker and you would have more control.

Remove everything with spirit gum remover.

I can't stress the barrier spray enough. Between the two costumes, I have put fake eyebrows over my own about ten times now and haven't ended up removing my own eyebrows yet!

Yes, but they do use wool hair for professional grade projects too. I had to use it for my period makeup for my Makeup for Motion Picture class. And you are right, it's time consuming but it looks good when it comes to the final product.

one of my theater friends told me that if you use the crepe hair on some liquid latex and mesh, you can create the look once onto something that's more easily applied. He told me this after I had created a full beard for the second time, which took about two and a half hours.
My room mate did his technique for his wolverine chops and they turned out fantastic looking. I wasn't witness to the creation process but he said he just took a cloth mesh screen, applied liquid latex, applied crepe hair, let it dry. Rinse and repeat until desired thickness/look is achieved.

how funny, I just got this in the mail yesyerday - real hair, mesh back - rubbies "gaucho style" this is just resting on my lip, no glue.

I will be trimming and afixing later
