Hi all!
Don't have a lot of free time to post my own projects these days, but
last weekend I actually had some time to do something proppy!
I had found a thread a little while ago where Steve the Swede had done
an excellent re-weathering job on an eFX Luke ANH X-Wing helmet, and
I thought it just looked fantastic.
I've had my eFX helmet for quite a while now and it's an excellent piece.
It's very well made, fully lined, and it looks great on display with my
other fan made X-Wing and Y-Wing helmets. I was never quite satisfied
with the factory weathering job. So when I saw Steve's thread I decided
to do some more weathering to my helmet.
I decided to use pastel powders on mine. So I began by masking off the
visor, the whole interior, and the black trim around the bottom opening and
sprayed on a couple of light coats of Testors dull coat. I know that pastels
don't like to stick to semi-flat surfaces as well as flat ones. So I did this to
give the pastels some tooth.
I used a soft brush to tap pastel dust onto the areas where I wanted them
to show up the most and then used a stiff bristled brush to "pounce" them
into the surface.
I did this in stages, using Steve's pics as a guideline. Once I had the pastels
pretty much where I wanted them, I went back with some balled
up masking tape (with the sticky side out) and dabbed at the newly applied
weathering. This picked up some of the dust and made some interesting
transitions from dark to not-so-dark.
Where there were patches of lighter base color showing through, I used
an X-acto blade very lightly to scratch through the pastels, exposing some
of the pale gray beneath. I also did this to add some more chips to the
red stripes, the Rebel symbols on the upper panels, and the mohawk cap.
Once I was satisfied with how everything looked, I sealed the new weathering with a
couple of coats of Krylon low odor clear flat. I've found that pastels have to be sealed
with some type of clear coat, otherwise they always tend to rub off a little with handling.
So that's pretty much it! Thanks to Steve the Swede for sharing his
amazing work and providing some inspiration to us detail-obsessed, nutty
