RE: Painting ABS vacuum-formed parts

Hey, guys. I'm a frequent lurker and first time poster.

I've recently aquired some Gene Simmons boot shells, and I'm not sure what paint will stick to them. I want to finish them a gunmetal metallic grey, and NOT the silver they were on the reunion tour.

Any suggestions? Something straight out of the can would be ideal. :) If not, I have an airbrush.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Most paints will bound to ABS but Plastic based paints are best especially Rustoleum brand paints they are generally more flexible and a richer formula of bound and they have the best Metallic paints for the price.

Good luck

I've had pretty good success with rattle can paints, but the surface prep is very important. I will scotch brite the surface to give it a little tooth, removing the shine, and then, just prior to painting, it needs to be cleaned with denatured alcohol. Very important. They make some plastic primers too that may be an appropriate undercoat that will help with the adhesion. Just pick a top coat that you know will be compatible and always do a test sample and give it adequate time to dry before passing judgment.
