Randy Cooper 38" Star Destroyer Kit

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

I emailed Randy to see what technique and colors he used on his SD, I really like the paint effect.

For those experienced painters do you think he did a dark grey or black preshading, then main color applied with a slight wash and some drybrushing?

I'm going black as a basecoat for primer........then white spray over that. I'll use a light gray to change certain panels.....very light gray. At least that is my plan.

I was planning to preshade all the trenches, superstructures and whole engine area then apply the main color giving some depth.

Is the main color off white or very light grey? anyone who seen the real prop in person care to chime in?

[panic mode]

What's happening (if anything) about the inner hull/armature? Anyone have any solutions?

Let's not get our screen SD's mixed up. I believe the ESB/ROTJ era ones to be slightly darker than the original ANH one. I'm positive the ANH model was pretty much all white. In fact, I was told by one of the original ANH model builders, Lorne Peterson, that it was painted flat white because it made it look so much bigger on film.

GF, I don't know if I'd shade the trenches, as the shadows already do that because it's so recessed from the edge anyway. I think it will appear too dark if you do. I learned this the hard way on the Falcon model. Alot of shade depth will happen naturally with the same base color all over the model.

Having seen that original ANH model in person, it was solid flat white..........not off white or gray, but white white.

OK, Its time.
Randy is shipping the first batch of kits out this week and he told me to start taking orders on the production run.:thumbsup

The kit is selling for $585.00(USD) + S&H.
Expected production time is 8 weeks from payment.

If you want to order one, email me at dabar1@sbcglobal.net
Include the COMPLETE address where the kit will be shipped so I can calculate S&H.
I will then reply with payment instructions.
Do not send payments without prior email contact.

All payments will be made via Paypal.

Randy prefers that all orders go through me so that he can spend his time in production. Contacting Randy directly will only slow down the process for all of us.

There are "details" painted various colors of off white which are shown beautifully in PA's pix. IE, shades of rust and blue/gray, But definitely base color of white.

The base color for the Avenger style SD is a light gray color. If you want to make a case for off white you could go there I guess, but basic white - no. It is not white. It is light gray with a every so slightly darker gray shading of various panels. And as pointed out there are a few patches of a "very" slightly rust color.

One of the problems is that the model is always displayed in a dark room so when the flash of the camera goes (needed due to it being so dark) its totally washed out because the flash lighted hull is so in contrast to the background.

Seeing it with the eye I can tell you that its light gray or (if you wanted to characterize it this) way off-white. In reality its similar to the Millenium Falcons color... but more gray IMO.

Its definitely a tough color to match perfectly. The fact that the FX guys color adjusted the SD shots makes it especially hard since it looks darker on screen then it is - but its not white. Does that make any sense ???

I plan on experimenting a bit with a lightened Deck tan - only not lightened quite as much as for the Falcon... But almost ;)
