R2D2 Build

Nice!!! The blue color on the dome doesn't look quite right. Could be the lighting, but what color scheme did you go with? I know there is several. I myself went with the House of Color scheme. I think it's the closest, though I think they came out with a better one in these past years. Good job, anyway.

I went with an astromech color scheme the first time. it was inolved because it involved two paints and a primer. This time I just picked up a blue from Sears and gave that a try. IT does look a bit light, though, where the old color looked far too dark.

Some dome one progress. The Weld from the top is almost totally gone, so I started working on the sides. Problem is, I'm wearing these dremel parts down to nothing way to fast. If I didn't need to switch parts every two panels, I could get it all done tomorrow and start working on the attachable panels..

death star red... it's a tad darker than the photo shows it as. Before and after photos of JB weld removal.
decided to stay one more day since it's going to be cold anyway. Weld removal and paint removal is done. Now time for paint and polish.

I know it would take more polishing to do, but couldn't you have sand blasted those JB welds off? You could have also melted them off, as JB welds will melt at about 300 -315C, and aluminum melts at 660 C.

Yep, but I Was told not to melt it. And we don't have any sand blasting equipment. Last thing I had sand blasted got dented by the force.

All painted

or at least ten times better than it was before when it got dismantled.

Now that the paint is showing all the spots that need finishing off, I can clean off the dome a little bit more and give it a final set of paint. I'm hoping the black will hide most of it anyway ;o).

Just haphazardly throuh them on. A few panels will be bent back into shape when the clamps get put back on. Things need to be polished a bit more. But other than that, things are ready to be glued in. Maybe I'll make this a battle damaged one to cover up the repair attempts.

I'm ordering a new radar eye. new surrounds will be here soon. will probably get resin HP's.

As for dome one, I just have to figure out why the lights are suddenly not working right, after working fine for years....once that is fixed, dome 2 will be done...and I can finally start focusing on 3P0 when things get here, as well as KITT

looking great! really like the black n red color scheme:thumbsup
its quite a hefty price, can't believe how much all of the components cost...wow!
I am building an R6, so far total price is...........nowt! lol, its a cardboard build, obviously its not going to look as awesome as this, but its coming along.

Minus the lights, all but done with dome two. It looks 80% better than the first mess. Thanks in a large part to the pre cut holes ;o).

Although I STILL can't get those back RLD panels to fit on right. The clamps damage the paint job. But, one bad panel out of 12 + isn't all that bad compared to last time.

A little more polish is also needed.. it's still not the sheen I'd like. Although it is tempting to do a lighter full on death star droid rather than just the head. I really like that black and red scheme.

I knew this wasn't going to look good when I started due to panel bending when it came off...but for a retread, it doesn't look all that bad.

New Logics should come soon. will get a new radar eye...Probably resin Hps.

and finally giving these new blue coats

Just bought the last parts...two metal half moons to replace the resin ones on the front foot. Now I really can claim an all metal droid ;o)

Dome 2 finally completed. I still plan on adding light up front holo, periscope, and maybe moving holo/arms... but that's a long ways away. Maybe someone will have an episode 7 promotion coming up locally I can use him for. it was well worth the upgrade.

looks good! you didnt happen to use the same body frame as the ones on ebay did you? i was just curious if you are the one selling the wood body kits on ebay, very nice work!!

Small and last update for a while. R2 Will be all metal in a few days. his last remaining metal parts, two moons for the front foot, will be here this week. This brings his total cost up to about $9500. Eventually, I will get a moving holo projector setup going, and a periscope, but I need to wait for parts to go on sale...

A shame I don't have a scale to guess how much the guy weighs
