R2-D2 foam build. Pictures of R2's trip to school.

Re: R2-D2 foam build.

Got an IKEA near you? If you still need a dome on the cheap, you could check their clearance section or parts department for just the shroud of the BRASA pendant lamp. Site says it's 18'' diameter.

Re: R2-D2 foam build.

Unfortunately not. Small town of 2800 nothing is near lol. The closet city is 2 hours away and that has no IKEA. Thanks for the tip though I appreciate it.

Re: R2-D2 foam build.

If you can find or make a bowl with the right shape you could try using expandable insulation foam. bout 10-15 a bottle. If you use two bowls I bet you could form the dome like an injection mold. This would keep with the foam theme and keep it light as well.

Re: R2-D2 foam build.

That would be awesome but I am on a budget of just pennies. Don't worry guys I am sure I figure something out. Half the fun is in the figuring... I am going to work on the rest of him first and see what I find.
cheers.

Re: R2-D2 foam build.

You're a foam LEGEND! :D

For the dome it sounds like you'll have to resort to a bunch of foam triangles and a LOT of sanding.

Can't wait to see the end result though! Love the threads. :thumbsup

Re: R2-D2 foam build.

Been thinking about how light this thing will be. Sure it can be a good thing, but a little concerned about how easy it will fall over. I am thinking maybe putting some wood in the base of the feet. It will give the wheels something to screw into and make it bottom heavy.

Re: R2-D2 foam build.

I think the center foot needs to come out a bit more. That will add to the stability - but you're right: he'll need to have a low center of gravity, or he'll be doing "Captured by Jawas" consistently. :lol

Re: R2-D2 foam build.

None of the legs of feet are glued together yet. I totaly agree the center foot need to come out a bit more. It was the only possition I could get the body to sit on it for the photo. I will be working on the skirt next and some smaller details like the coin drop section and so forth.
I am going to the city on Wednesday and I am hoping I might be lucky enough to some cheap RC cars at Value Village and Salvation Army stores. I have been thinking about putting a motor in the center foot or maybe somehow rigging two into the outside feet. I also don't see why just because I am building it out of foam and on a shoe string budget why I can't have lights and sounds and maybe even a little movement on the head. Still throwing around some ideas.
I know people use a lazy suzanne or susan or however the heck it is called lol. That wont work with the foam but I am sure I can figure out some way of giving it a little movement. I wont be able to get it to spin 360, but maybe 180 left to right kinda thing.

Re: R2-D2 foam build.

lol, well we have 147 cases of them. lol
$5 a box. All the guides have to sell 8 cases each, my little girl has sold 8 and a hlaf so far. She is trying to get the highest seller badge.

Re: R2-D2 foam build.

Help needed. I have been looking at a lot of pics and photos of R2 and I came across something that I need others expert opinion on. Take a loot at the pics below. These were taken from the star wars storybook. I am trying to figure out which way R2's leg are supose to go. If you look you will see that on his legs up near the shoulder area he has two small squares on one side and a long rectangle on the other side. However in some some photos the two small square are at the front and in some photos they are near the back. Does anyone know which is the proper way?.
Even on the R2 toys they are different depending on the version of toy.
Going into escape pod the rectangle is facing the front.

In the Sandcrawler the two squares are facing the front.
DSCF5442.jpg

While 3P0 is getting his oil bath the squares are at the back again.
DSCF5443.jpg

On the falcon the squares are at the front again.
DSCF5444.jpg

Then while being loaded into the X-Wing they are at the front again.
DSCF5446.jpg

here are three of my sons R2 toys notice they are different aswell.
DSCF5438.jpg

Now I know this was simply someone screwing up with the different version of R2 for the different scenes. but does anyone know which is the proper way?.

Also take can anyone help me with where on R2 this is supose to be plugged into.
DSCF5445.jpg

I also noticed that on the front cover the pic of R2 has bracets attached to his feet and the skirt section.
DSCF5440.jpg

Also anyone know what the dark sections are behind the battery boxes in this pic?.

Any help would be great thanks.
