Hi all, although I have assembled and owned two trooper suits in the past they were both made from ABS (FX and AP kits). Now I'm pleased to say I have a TE2 winging it's way to me, but as styrene is completely new to me I thought I should ask a few questions to anyone in-the-know before it all ends up in tears :)

Firstly, what glue is best for styrene? I remember reading here on the RPF some time ago that one thing that someone had learned is that super glue is not, well... super. I used Devcon plastic welder on my ABS suits. Would that be OK with the Styrene?
Any suggestions or opinions?

Secondly, and this is really to the UK TE suit owners, what paint is best? I cant seem to source the rustoleum white here in the UK that our American friends use. I read something about 'Halfords appliance white'? If that's correct would I need to use undercoat?

I think thats about it for now although I'm sure more questions may follow when I start assembly. Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks, Sean

Hiya Sean :)

E6000 is great for styrene.I use it and it's holding up fine, much better than any other contact adhesives I tried. Not too sure about the paint, but I have used 'Plastikote' white for a helmet once with good result's though not sure how well it would hold up for the armour.Good luck with your build up and be sure to post pics when your done :thumbsup

Yes the plastic welder works really well. I owned a styrene TE2 and use that and also ABS cement as a "sealer" for extra strength. As far as paints goes, think I used a krylon High gloss, but not really positive on that one.

IPS Weld-On 3. Great liquid "glue" that melts all kinds of plastic (acrylic, too.) together for a solid bond.

Thanks for the info :thumbsup maybe I'll try and do a Clutch style progress thread when I get started

It's good to know the Devcon Plastic welder works because I know when I've used it on ABS wild horses couldn't have pulled those joins apart, and you can handle it after about 15 minutes, but I did find that much of it gets wasted due to the mixing (at least when I do it anyway :) ) so it's worth looking at the alternatives.

Could you tell me what the handeling time is for E6000 and the IPS Weld-On 3?

E6000 has a suggested 24 hour drying time and that's the only downside for this adhesive.Where do you get this Devcon plastic welder from in the UK?I would like to try this stuff for myself.

I've used thick CA glue on several sets of ANH and FX armor and it works great, bonds fast and clear and I've never had it fail. Personally I hate dealing with goopy cements that dissolve the material, take hours to set and dry to a yellow. E6000 is awesome stuff but the fumes and the set up time are terrible. With CA you can wear the armor in less than a minute. Moncal enlightened me to use CA glue. You have to sand the pieces and clean them with alcohol first, (but this is best for all glues) 20 seconds of clamping and you're done.

paul, quit posting and get to sculpting... :angry

did you ever know that your my "HERO"? :p

sorry... had to... :lol

I always use Appliance White from Halfords Auto Section, you can use normal car white undercoat for the base. It looks spot on.

When I assembled my TE I didn't use any glue, just screws and then taped the lense material on.
