Questions About Bond Films that You Have been Afraid to Ask SPOILERS

They're great novels, I'd really like to see them put on screen as period pieces.

I would LOVE to see a version of Moonraker that was true to the book. The movie was so far from it that only the character names matched up in my eyes.

Though, 007 Legends envisioned it in an interesting way... still not true to the book

I just watched YOLT again yesterday, never noticed before but check out the final launch scene from the volcano base. Look at the wheels of the rocket platform. One set of wheels is going backwards and another isn't even moving. I guess someone forgot to lube the wheels on the miniatures.

Bloody hilarious.

(I tried to post an animated GIF on Photobucket, but for some unknown reason there's some kind of error and it won't upload and it's not a file size issue)

Also notice that during the explosions in the volcano all the 'bodies' bounce around.

I still think an HBO series of period pieces true to the books would be awesome. Break each book up into 6 one hour episodes. :thumbsup

Regarding Bond being a know-it-all, rewatching DR NO's opening I was reminded of Bond being able to give M sensible answer to "Does the term 'toppling' mean anything to you?"

Right, but it'd make sense that he'd be familiar with something like that, since it's directly related to his line of work. Moore's Bond is a total know-it-all about EVERYTHING. To the point where it gets both annoying and unbelievable, in my opinion.

Yep yep yep. Also his smarmy smirk made it worse. "I'm the smartest boy in the class, I am. Here let me show you (up) ...."

I know exactly what you mean-- the worst offence was in TMWTGG in the very beginning when M asks if Bond knows who Scaramanga is-- Moore spouts off this huge biography off the top of his head and then ends with '......why, sir?'

M should have clocked him one, lol

*BTW that reminds me: I once made this for a Bond forum and it kind of fits! Roger Moore brings his British sass to GoldenEye:

Thank you! I was trying to argue that earlier (I forget who with :lol).

"Does the term 'déjà vu' mean anything to you, OO7?"

"Why yes sir, I believe the term refers to something which one has or suspects to have seen or experienced before, especially when that’s not the case, from the French, déjà, “already”, + vu, “seen” -- hold on sir, didn't you ask me this before my last mission?"

"Exactly, OO7. Welcome to routine desk duty. We'll start you on nights, OOW. See Tanner for your new office location. Dismissed...."

Yes, we were discussing just this point, and just this movie, a few pages back. Over on AJB007, someone quoted a Kingsley Amis review many years ago, something about a quip that set the series on a long journey of comedic nonsense, and one of the tropes was the Moore-Bond having an inexhaustible supply of arcane and detailed information, the product of a photographic memory or eating Encyclopedia Britannica saleswomen for breakfast, lunch and dinner. :p Thankfully, Connery wasn't as adept at run-on sentences as Desmond Llewelyn.

I really tend to think of Moore's era as this wholly separate beast. It's like a series unto itself. The character and tone of those films are so different from what came before or after that it's tough for me to think of the character that way.

Connery's Bond knew information that was intimately related to his mission, and other bits of vague info. The other stuff that he knew backwards and forwards was good livin'. That kind of thing makes sense to me.

The lepitoptery bit in OHMSS is an odd bit of knowledge which I'd have forgiven if it had only happened the one time. Ok, so Bond has a hobby. Groovy. Nice ruffled shirt, by the way, speaking of "groovy."

I haven't gotten to the Dalton or Brosnan films in my Bond run-through, but I don't recall either of them being particularly know-it-all about EVERYTHING as much as just being well versed in other spies or fine living. And Craig, well, he's basically Bond from the novels, which is fine by me.

I think I recall Brosnan having a moment or two but nothing near as bad as Moore. Therefore I concur with your assessment. :):thumbsup

Connery had only one annoying moment like that from what I can remember- from Diamonds are Forever.

Bond: (Takes sip) 'Mmm, '51 I believe.'
M: 'There is no year for Sherry OO7.'
Bond: (initiate smartass mode)"I was referring to the original vintage on which the sherry is based. 1851"
M: 'OO7 we're going to have a quick private meeting to discuss your forced retirement.'

ok so I made that last line up, lol. But I mean come on Bond.....

Actually come to think of it, DAF was the last one before Moore started. I wonder if the early 70's was just the era for know-it-alls?

I just finished watching Thunderball, continued by Never Say Never Again.

I forgot how good (or bad) NSNA, but after all these Bond talks, I watched it with different perspective now.

Bond in NSNA had his old, close to retirement and some wise@$$ attitude.
Apart from bad remaking of Thunderball, this is a nice twist of the ending of Bond (going more desk job, teaching new agents and in the end, retiring with beautiful Domino).
It makes me wanna watch original Casino Royale, where Bond IS actually retired.

Some highlights:
M is particular annoying with "behind the desk burden" attitude times ten.
I just noticed "Mr. Bean" took a role in this movie.
Stockholm syndrome which later used in TWINE.
Exploding pen - mentioned in Skyfall (?)

In TB, Bond did "it" underwater (hope we didn't scare the fish). Now that's something different :lol.
Both movies had the girl took a dive showing the "behind" sticking put of the water.
The villain is better with TB, but what's with the eye patch? Perhaps one eyed villain is more "pirate" look?

The SPECTRE logo (yellow/black flags), has it been used in any other Bond movies?
In TB, it was skull/octopus like logo. Is there any other SPECTRE logo out there?
So after Blofeld died, number one position now has been passed down? Is that how SPECTRE works? If yes, what's the deal with the *****? Or does Blofled is more like mortal enemy like Joker to Batman?

DAF was really the beginning of the end for classic Bond. Connery should have stayed away.

However when it comes to drink and fine living I give them a pass on ridiculous knowledge, it's in his character. Much like the "disappointing" comment in Goldfinger.

Some excellent points and fun/"interesting" moments from the films. :lol

I actually enjoyed NSNA a lot. I guess partly because I tend to view it in a vacuum, and seperate it a bit from the canonogocal timeline.

First, I whole heartedly agree its interesting to see Bond (especially Connery) in his twilight years of near retirement. I felt they utilized his age very well and explored it (Mike hates when I use that word) for the sake of the character (rather than ignoring/hiding it as the Moore films did for the most part. John Glen once said they used "every trick in the book" to make Moore seem younger in AVTAK. And don't get me started about the Bibi Dahl storyline in FYEO - what were they thinking?). This Bond ages, and he comes to terms with it. His body isn't what it used to be, and gives the character soul IMO.

I also enjoyed the humor in this movie more so than some of the other Bond moments high in cheese factor. The "from here?" line still cracks me up. Just pure Bond wit, off the cuff and hardly forced. The "your room or mine" line is also a great Bond moment that shows both his vulnerability AND immense luck for escaping death.

I think NSNA Largo's grandiose/flamboyant performance aged well and stands alongside some of the more colorful Bond villains.

I felt Fatima Blush was a touch over the top for my tastes (I prefer more realistic and gritty villains), but she was definitely fun and interesting - though I think the laughing scene lasted a FEW too many seconds.

I really enjoyed Kim Basinger's performance though I read she had a somewhat difficult time on set.

Of course the video game scene has aged a bit, and I can't for the life of me figure out what is actually going on within the screen, it's not terrible. If you ignore the cheesy effects and focus on the posturing between Bond and Largo, I think Connery does a good job getting into his head.

I def agree about M being a little annoying in this movie. Didn't mind Attkinson's performance.
