Question to the small scale bust scupltors.

A friend of mine is considering making a mini-bust of her SWG character, a la Gentle Giant. The problem I see is the company 3D Art to Part does these by taking a CG model and letting a machine do the sculpting with the meshes you send them. Now, the finished product is a very rough, sandy textured looking sculpt where details are smoothed out. How hard, and what would be involved in adding details to said piece and making a mold of it to send to our other friends?

Is sculpey a route to go? Would it be better to use clay, and if so, is it impossible to cure the item? Is the painting going to be a chore for each individual piece? So many questions on this stuff. Oh, if this is the wrong area, Mods, please put it where it belongs, since it isn't EXACTLY a prop.

I depends on how much detail on the piece your friend wants, I've sculpted all kinds of Miniatures but it's very time consuming...

Your friend could do both, first have a 3D Model made from the 3D Mesh and then clean it up and then mold it, that way if she isn't a pro sculptor she could get the exact details wanted and then improve it from the Rough Sculpt .

If you want any more help or advice let me know...

This is the site and a shot of the detail you get. What would you overlay on top of the basic "sculpt" to add in details? The real big twist comes in the pistol she has the model holding. It is very intricate, to say the least.

It would depend on what material is used for the 3D Model, it looks like a Foam, if it is, that could be smoothed out a bit before having to add anything on top, I'd use Bondo for a surface coat and to clean up the details, it would also be possible to use Magic-sculpt which is a Water Soluble two-part epoxy putty that can be worked with quickly for great results.
(I used Magic-sculpt to sculpt the Neelix Tree for Star Trek: Deep Space 9 :thumbsup it's great stuff.)
