Yes, the pilot (and a few episodes following) used a different style "calculator" handlink than the version pictured above. The shape was similar, but the graphics and electronics were fairly different.

AC385, the screen-used piece used six DLG 4137 dot matrices for the display.

Wow, Quantum Leap... Awesome project, as cool as the "Sliders" Timer, is not more. I loved how Al used to hit the handlink when Ziggie didn't made things correctly. ^_^

I loved both; The " Lego system " one was interesting too, since it didn't appeared to be technical - that created a kind of mystery that deepened the interest, at least for me.

I'd be really interested to see that coming into a kit, putting a collective effort to make this happen. Droidboy, that would be a great project to scan interest of, if I may suggest that ( to moderators : this is not a " would like to buy " thing, it's more a " let's create this " ) to get the electronics' problem craked.

EDIT : Just found a few threads about the handlinks. There's a couple great props around ! But, it seems the projects' a it cursed, nobody could do it except a few - as Droidboy did -... too bad !

Original 1st Season Handlink..

I want this handlink prop sooooooooooooo bad. I've always wanted this one ever since I first saw it. I love this one waaaaaaaaaay better than the gummy bear handlink. This was just seems a ton more realistic and practical. The gummy bear one does NOT have a screen or buttons. This one does. I want this so incredibly bad it's killing me. Does anyone have this one they would be willing to sell?

does anyone have more info that what posted here on the first and second handlinks? i have PLENTY of acrylic, both smoked and clear. all sizes needed and then some,that's not a problem. WE get/do vinyl decals too, no problem. i could probally, find the parts/chips,no problem. i could make them both. the problem IS, what are measurements, details,bluepriprints, schematics, info., pics, ANYTHING! i cant do decals without dimensions. we have a family business that makes decals, plexi sales, chipcorded access, etc... i can make them but i need help. id be glad to post pics along the way, as no one has tackled this, or shared the "along the way" details. its all about the Gummi Bear, which is cool, but these need more attention. they were the start, and in some of the best episodes. please help, and we Leapers will finally have them more accessible/correct info! email me at halocat76@gmail.com. just an update...i have created the GENESIS handlink, wasn't too difficult, now on to the next handlink, which i believe is photoed in this thread...all the while working out kinks in my gummi bear! im doing THE LEAP version, that was always my favorite. but does anyone know about th "middle" handlink? it was just like the operational calculator type but with a smaller screen.

I currently own the calculator-style link pictured above. The electronics need some work to get them fully functioning again, but it's on my to-do list.

that's actually what i'm doing. i'm starting from the beginning and making all the handlinks. it seems no one has done that- the cool early ones are always forgotten, it always just the gummi bear. i'll be posting pics along tyhe way, just finishing up the "Genesis" handlinks, there were actually 2 in that episode alone...pics to follow...

I actually own one of the screen-used calculator handlinks pictured above. In fact, Beechy McFly's first picture is a picture I took of the unit I own.

Unfortunately, the electronics are in need of some repair as the display portion doesn't function properly. I've been playing with it as I find time, but I haven't found the cause of the problem yet.

well, that IS great news for us all...YOU own that handlink??!! that is my favorite as well, and am starting from the beginning and building them all from the whole series. there is alot more than people think. i will post some pics, i have both done from the "Genesis" episode. then there is the one from Camakazi Kid, which i'm working out now, but i need more info that, and the early ones. I got the DVD series, and can only see so much on screen unfortunately!!!on the early ones. what do/are the functions do? i know the LEDs flash, and there is a screen that looks like it says "personal". what does it all say? i need to know to program the board for it. there is also another electronic early one (light smoked acrylic), i can see 2 switches on the side but know nnothing about that either. Anybody know. i'll build it... do any of the decals work as buttons? any help or better pics(sides, back) plus operational info would be GREATLY appreciated. i'd be glad to post how i mix the 21st century technology in as well as "along the way". my family owns a sign shop, so the plexi and decals won't be a problem. i have a few friends who deal/sell electronics needed so i'm all covered. i'll be posting some prototypes as well...but please help with info on your prop!!! thanks!!

Got a bunch of pics from years ago for resource to make one of each, but I am not gifted like so many prop makers here.. Tried to make a gummy bear version once, ended up in pieces.. :unsure

I don't car for the gummy either. I have been looking for a green square dot display for the other version of the handlink but no luck in finding one yet.

i've been building all from the beginning, that's pretty much next on my list...i'll post pics soon enough....
