Punisher costume build (rucka/cheechoo)

Since I have been growing a beard, I decided to go with a costume that would let me keep it. I loved the Rucka punisher run and the realism he was going for.

There are some really quality builds on the forum already, and I am more of a kit-basher when it comes to costumes so will be looking to purchase/modify things versus building them from scratch. The plate carrier he is wearing in the comic is fairly plain, with one of the prime features being the straps on the sides. I looked at a number of vests and even looked at the vests from the new punisher on Netflix. In the end I found kind of a compromise between the two:

I went with this one because it had a kind of skull like look in the arrangement of the plates. I will have to remove the loops, and maybe see if I can maybe move them closer to the waist like the classic punisher outfit.

I found a pretty high resolution image of the Rucka style punisher logo. I cleaned it up a bit and played with the color levels to emphasize the outlines:

I then created a vector image from it to use as a template. I have the original .svg file if someone would like it, just ask. Here is a link to to the large scaled PNG file:

I scaled it to 10" x 14", which filled most of the vest and conveniently fit on a piece of ledger sized paper when I printed it out. Since I wa using just 20lb paper, I used a glue stick to lay the template down. I cut the eyes out of Painter's tape since they were floating:

So I removed all of the straps from the front of the vest. Then laid out the skull template and sprayed it with some Valspar White Automotive primer. The initial spray went down in about two coats and looked pretty good, but I decided to go back with an airbrush and smooth some of the edges and apply the shading more like the comic book skull

And since I had the airbrush out I went ahead and painted all of the snaps black to make the vest a more uniform color.
