A few people over the years have done live fire PR's, and I've seen a handful of plug fire cap versions. I would guess that price has kept folks from doing a blank fire version. You can pick up a live fire auto ordnance "pistol" version for half that cost.
I bought the C02 version from Umarex legends M1A1 and it's a lot of fun to shoot. I'll slap that into some shrouds eventually.

Its too expensive for starters. If you want big muzzle flash then it needs to be a live fire Thompson. Do you have $40,000 laying around? Plus the laws associated with having such a thing are strict. The spas cage is $1000 - $2500. You need a 870 shotgun which runs $500. You also need to be well versed on how to assemble a Pulse Rifle. They are NOT easy to build.
Could a semi-auto Thompson be used? I've seen those selling for around $1,000
Only if your state allows short barrel rifles (SBRs), you pay the $200 tax stamp, and file the ATF paperwork, fingerprints, etc.
I've considered using the Philadelphia Ordnance blank firing upper to go with my screen accurate lower. It would still be much cheaper and easier than obtaining a real machine gun.

You could use a Semi auto Thompson. They come with a 16 inch barrel... You would need a tax stamp and register as a SBR which costs around $200. Some states have restrictions. You are still pushing $5000 and the time and money needed to assemble. Its NOT easy... You really need to have some Gun smithing background or be ready to learn first before you start modding real firearms... Could be dangerous and perhaps deadly. I wouldnt be able to do it.
