I've got a couple of projects I'm working on, and this one is still in the design stage and I already would like some feedback.
Hopefully though some things we come up with here will be helpful for other builds I am doing or planning on diong from 2D animated source material.
I would like to build a (sort of) replica of Sokka's water tribe sword from Avatar: The Last Airbender. I know that his boomerang, and even the space sword are more iconic, but I really like the tribal feel of this item. I would really like to build this sword - not a replica exactly, but more of what it would look like if it were real while holding as true as possible to the source material.
Here's the problem: Since it's 2D animation, this thing looks different in every source photo I see, so I need to create my own design, stay true to the original, make it recognizable, and yet deal with the fact that it won't look exactly like each time it is seen.
So, here's my question for forum members:
There are basically three designs for this weapon I've seen
There's the straight club version (above)
And then there's a more curved version (no picture avaliable)
And the hooked sword.
Now there is a strong likelihood that the sword and the club are entirely separate "props" but the show never references that. As far as I know he only carried his boomerang and one tribal weapon with him. I like the stone ball in the club, so I will keep that either way. It reminds me of this: http://fineart.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=643&lotIdNo=6224
In the movie (which I normally pretend never happened) they combined this item with the boomerang to make a curved club that comes back. Not using that.
I've attached my sketches of how I would do it either way, including question marks for whether or not to include the sowrd option. WHile these may seem like small details, at full size they make a huge difference. One thing I didn't expect was that when I first started sketching is that when I imagine the two options full size, I would use them very differently. Obviously the curved club is meant to have the round part as the main striking point (a very tribal feature), but the straghter version makes it seem more like a big weight on the end of a sword ( a more asian feature) and both speak to me and to the roots of the character.
They are both just rough design sketches right now, but I'm having a hard time deciding which design to go with. Any thoughts?
Disclaimer - I don't own any of these images. They are for reference only.
