Prop Storage And Display Units

Question regarding displaying props so it seems prop related. Dump into the Off Topic D if not!

I am getting ready to set up my props in our new family room (with wifey's consent) and looking at various ways to display them and keep the rugrats OUT!

I am interested in two styles of Ikea glass display cabinets. Anyone else use these? Are they sturdy enough? I will mostly be displaying Pirates and Indy props so most items are not going to be larger or heavier than Indy's gold idol.

Cabinet #1 - Nice and sturdy but not to happy about the sides and back being solid. $149.00 each.

Cabinet #2 - Nice price! Glass all the way around but not to sure about stability and items displayed that have weight. $59.00 each

The Detolf is your best bet. I have two of them and they are plenty sturdy. I've had everything from squadrons of Mecha to Props on them and never had a problem. They're cheap, look great and at that price you can easily add more when you run out of space.

Around here the Detolf is all the rage. Do a search and you should turn up a couple discussions about it.

I swear by the Detolf cases, they're fantastic for the money.
Plus there's a guy on eBay who sells locks for them, so that would take care of your rugrat trouble :lol

When I displayed a heavy item (solid wood "pyramid" I made to display challenge coins), I cut two aluminum bars to set the glass shelf on for my Detolf. That worked just fine.

SOLD! Well 5 out of 5 prop collectors recommend Detolf!!! Off to Ikea tonight!

Thanks fellow prop displayers! I love this website!:love

I was going to get a detolf (and still will) but had to get http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/60128562
Theres the size in the pic below. It seems a bit sturdier, but twice the price of the detolf. Bigger dimensions inside (bought it mainly for the bsg helm as wouldnt fit detolf) and advantage is that it comes with a lock and raised a bit off the ground. Either way you cant go wrong with a detolf

Cab # 1 is bigger than the detolf and has 2 solid sides so that there is no viewing from the side. I was looking at this one for my Walnut Scale "stick and tissue" airplanes.

I use the detolf for display. They look good, and they are the right size. Running the wires for lights is a little tricky.

so i'm guessing the detolf is cabinet number 2?

Thanks for posting this, I am actually considering getting glass cases from ikea..

I've got 9 detolf's in my prop room with lighting kits in all of them. It looks like a museum :)

For wiring the lights, I use the cable management tubing they have at Ikea... grey tube, slit along the length. I wrap that around one of the rear metal supports then run the wires through it.

I've been using one of the low profile, adhesive backed LED light kits. 1 light per shelf. The sad part is that the lights end up costing just about the same as the cases themselves!!!

Are those kits at Ikea also or do you get them somewhere else?

Has anyone tried using those hockey puck sized battery operated LED lights for cabinet lighting? I think you can get them at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and other fine "Kitchen" stores.

Do you have a picture that shows what you did?

Another option is to get surplus retail display cases from craigslist etc. I got a really nice 4' lighted glass and steel display case for quite cheap.
