Here are drawings of the original design.

I have the first of the two walls built. I may just do elements of the other wall as add-ons to my existing room wall rather than build another one like this first one.

Here are pix of a little desk-backer I made out of the scrap from the display wall.

There's a little beverage/snak replicator on there. I chose to replicate something that settles just right after a spontaneous project.

Here's the question:

I need to build the standing consol now. I want to build it right (backlit) and I understand how to do the plexi and lighting and light box. What I need help on is making the corners and edges seamless.

I know a lot of set pieces from the shows and movies were fiberglass and some were MDF and maybe even ply wood.

I've never worked with fiberglass before and would like to use MDF or plywood for this. How do I hide the seams where the faceing pieces of plywood meet each other at the edges and corners?

Example of a pice from ST:ENT - (I do not want this marbled surface for my consol, but this was a convenient pic for me to use.)

Andy,

If you are using MDF or ply couldn't you just use wood filler for the seams and then sand them? BTW, love the progress shots.

that looks GREAT!
what are the things with the niners logo?
also, those rules of aquisition covers look great! where did you get those?

Thanks everyone. Wood filler is a good idea... never used it before though, in large quantities.

The niners logo things are patches from Patch Geeks. http://www.patchgeeks.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/21/products_id/4231
I have a blue ball cap that I'm planning sewing one of them onto.

The Ferengi Rules book is something I got in trade recently. Sector7g painted it up for me. He did a fatastic job, eh? I still need to make the pages for it.

I love the concepts and the graphic panels.

I would be interested to see what people think... plywood vs MDF. Can you put a coat of bondo over plywood to smoothen the surface, eliminate grain and contour the console? What is the difference between using the wood filler vs the bondo?

Thanks all. I think I'm going to go with MDF and wood filler. I don't have to worry about smothing the surface of the MDF for painting.

Please toss any details of your build that you can out to us. I think it looks great. I also want to make a control panel for halloween myself so any tips would help.

Andy,

So you are going to do wood filler with MDF, primer maybe? Sand, then primer again? Something along those lines?

Yeah, I think that's the plan. Fram it out with pine or what ever I have handy, cut and screw/wood glue the panels of MDF on the frame, fill the seams and screw holes with wood filler and sand, prime and sand again if need be, prime then paint.

I also have to work out exactly how to do the light box and plexi mount, but I think I am going with a Defiant style LCARS panel; plexi surface mounted to the console.

Whenever I see something like this, I'm always slapped by how sparse my own skills are! :)

Beautiful work!
