Predator Martial Arts

Well of course since Preds exist only in imagination, we can imagine anything we want about them----they practice karate, they like playing pinochle on weekends, their favorite color is blue, they prefer vanilla ice cream to chocolate. (shrug)

But nevertheless the canonical depiction of Preds, by the people who invented them, is that they are hunters, not warriors.

they are hunters, not warriors.

True, but what is it that they HUNT? they have been shown in canon to hunt the warriors of other species, specifically humans. they aren't traveling the galaxies to "use karate on deer and tigers", they are coming to test wits and might against a worthy OPPONENT. but they are hunting alright; they hunt for glory and pride. They do not eat their kills; they skin them and take it's bones for display in a trophy room.

they're like the antagonist from "The Most Dangerous Game", where they seek a challenge by pursuing an intelligent quarry that could potentially kill them first.

that being said, if i were to choreograph a fight for a Yautja, i would employ a variety of fast and very powerful strikes, as well as strong slashing and scratching to quickly wound the opponent enough to slow him down. i would draw them in to force an attack, then evade it quickly. then while they are off balance, i'd use my dense body mass to shove them or ram them to get the knock-down. once they hit the ground, i go in for the kill. since the skull is considered a prize, i'd strike to the throat or abdomen in most prey in order to end them quickly and without damaging the skull.

I am not so sure they didn't eat the skins myself. None of the films show any evidence of them being left intact.
Now I suppose they could have vapourised them easily enough.
But most respectful hunters honour their kill by drinking the blood, specific rituals,, using the skins etc. And yes, they do go for worthy humans to hunt, we know they keep the bones but no one really knows what happens to the rest of the body...

I remember there being a topic like this a while ago with what the predators do with remains, etc. I always figured they collect the trophy and make use of the body for clothing, etc. Usually the belts have leather which could be skin from previous hunts. I always thought that the skinned bodies weren't worthy prey but they died in honor in the hunt so they were skinned and hung in honor.

Now as far as the martial arts go. Some one said that they're hunters, we don't use kung-fu to hunt deer. We don't, but we also don't live in a society based on who the best hunter is. They hunt a lot of game and intellectual game also, we don't use kung-fu on deer because we understand what is going on. I'm sure that if predators were real that they would have training in grappling and weapons. Maybe not as intricate as kung-fu but still a technique for them to use if that situation arises. They pride them selves on being the best and when you do that you learn every thing to your advantage.

Also in P1 when Dutch punches P1 he almost looks surprised. As if saying oh, that's how you guys do that here. So he then repeated what Dutch did to him. I'm sure that he had the concept of punching but I thought it was funny how he was caught off guard by it.

I think for the P1 movie they wanted Jean Claude Van Damme to play the Predator cuz he could fight and stuff. Then they realized he was too short and chose Kevin Peter Hall which was taller and more menacing when next to Arnold who was already very intimidating himself. If I made a Predator movie or AVP I'd make sure there be some serious fighting style to these intergalactic hunters and not just taking off their helmets and screaming. In the AVP comics they are more agile than the movie counterparts, perhaps the rubber suits limit their vision and movement too much so it ends up not fighting much.

they do. i have heard of it but i cant remember what its called. they seem very agile but also smooth.

They chose Van Damme because they thought since he's a martial artist and was supposed to be agile. He's a kick boxer... what? His stature isn't very big and in comparison to Arnold and Carl he couldn't compare so they went with KPH to look more menacing.

Half true. van Damme only was in the picture in the old suit, which prove to be unsatisfactory to both director and performer. The picture with JCVD wearing the suit only surfaced with the advent of the Blu-ray.

KPH was chosen by Winston because they felt they needed a tall but muscled out actor, which fit the Massai profile they were aiming for, and it had to make Arnold look like a peanut according to the man himself. KPH was chosen on basis of earlier work on Harry and the Hendersons.

I imagine whatever the "type" is, it is most certainly very efficient and very brutal. Similar to a mix of Kalarippayattu and Sambo.

I remember in the graphic noval of AVP. The predators would battle in hand to hand combat to decide wich planet they would hunt on, broken tusk fought top knot. They have they're clans in they're corners. To me it seemed a lot like MMA there was puches, knees, and throws. At one point they even bash they're heads togather like rams. I could see them using somthing like MMA, they have been around for centeries and have kept all the things That work from each style while still having those primal instects as well
