Possible to convert my Iron Man helmet to make it wearable??

Ok probably a bit of a long shot this one but I was wondering what the options might be for converting my polyurethane iron man helmet so that it's wearable.

I bought it from monkeeman on the forum and whilst it looks awesome on display I sort of wish I'd have bought one where the back either detaches or is on a hinge/magnet of some kind so that it's wearable.

Here's a photo - does anyone have any experience or suggestions in converting helmets so that's they're wearable??

you could make that into a master mold and cast it in plastic

theres loads of tutorials on how to do it on this forum, 405th, the dented helmet, hunters lair and other similar sites.

blimey i'm not looking to recast it - at most just cut the back part of the existing helmet. i'm not at all interested in recasting.

are there any suggested ways for actually cutting the back off? where's best to cut etc without spoiling the helmet? any others already done this?

do you have a dremel? you can get a circular saw blade for a couple of quid, its super thin and being a circle, its very easy to cut a straight line. or just use a hacksaw blade on its own.

if you have an ugly cut, you can put a release agent on one of the pieces, fit it back in postition, tape it down, then fill the gap on the other part with bodyfiller, then remove the piece you appied the release too, sand both smooth and then you should have two very nice fitting pieces.

obviously, you'll need to repaint it though

use a super thin dremel or circular saw and carefully cut around the faceplate. afterward, cut the line connecting the jaw to the helm. once this is done, you can wear the helm. after fashioning a swinging mechanism for the faceplate, you can add detachable hinges (similar to a protruding nail on the helm and a c shaped piece on the jaw to hook into it and still rotate) on the bottom of the jaw connection so you can attach it, then swing it up to lock it with magnets or something.

personally i'd use an exacto sawblade to cut it out. using a dremmel you run the risk of really screwing the paint up with any wrong move. an exacto saw is more precise IMO/

no i dont have a dremel. i was hoping to perhaps use a small hacksaw. still not quite sure which part at the back to actually cut out.

I'm pretty sure monkeeman recasted that helmet from the 1:1 scale iron man bust so its not his work anyways. No permission required.

I'm pretty sure he didn't. Other's have bought his helmet and looks nothing like the helmet that's on the bust.
Please don't stir up a mess without proof to back it.

a post with an empty claim wont get you very far.

lets go:

looks pretty damn different to me.

Did you get anywhere with cutting the back? I'm soon to recieve a monkeeman helmet and would like to convert mine to be wearable. No clue where to start cutting the faceplate though?!

cut the ears off and the bottom two sections of the back off and reconnect with either Velcro or rare earth magnets. but be VERY careful. i just cut the back of of my IM helm and i made some ugly cuts and created more work/:

No - I decided to keep the original helmet as it was and I've got a new helmet on the way from monkeeman - with the back part already cut off. Should be arriving this coming week.

I didn't want to risk damaging or messing up the original.

One of the coolest parts of the helmet are the lights for the eyes. Even if you were to make it wearable, I think being able to see through the eyes and have them illuminated would be tough.

guys, sorry to be off point, i am new to this whole process, but i have just received my monkeeman helmet and was wondering how I should go about the filling stage and gettin really good lines etc. any help would be cool.

Have a look at my thread from when I was doing my first helmet:

I basically just used isopon filler to fill the marks/imperfections after I'd put on a couple of coats of primer.

Btw I've also just received another monkeeman helmet (with back part kindly removed) so it's wearable.

Will start a new project thread over the weekend.

Thanks for that link, it's inspiring and really gives me an idea as to what is involved.

Just like yourself I have never done anything like this, so if mine comes out half as good as yours I will be happy!

The gold colour is insane! I have heard somewhere to use like a brass coloured paint but think I'm gonna follow your lead, I can't wait to go to halfords for some stuff now!
