    Jul 9, 2010 - Iron Man Helmet - **FINISHED** 25-07-10 ** #1

Hi all. I received my iron man cast this week from a fellow forum member (cheers monkeeman). It's made from polyurethan and looks fantastic.

I've put a few photos below and will be using this thread to record my progress with painting etc.

Firstly I need to prime it which I'll hopefully get to do over the next few days. Then it needs some filler primer to clear up a few bits here and there.

In terms of painting I've got a couple of questions:-

    1. Do you need to prime the inside of the helmet? My first guess would be yes but wanted a second opinion.

    2. What are the names of the best/closest spray paints to use? I want to match the colours as closely to the movie red/gold as possible. I'm in the UK so Halfords will be the place I'm going to buy the paint.

    cheers!

Lol, and I worried about my casts having little tiny holes
I gotta stop being that picky

Anyways, no, you don't have to prime the inside unless you want to paint that too.
Also, try "nissan roma red" code AX5 for the red and a pale gold should do just fine for the gold

Mate, remember to sand that thing and to use a filler-primer and not only a primer. I had really bad experiences with the last one!
    Good luck!

    Thanks Gemini.

What order would you recommend I do the priming/filler priming/sanding? I was planning on doing normal priming first, then a filler priming, and then sanding to clear up the holes. Are there tutorials on this anywhere?

    Cheers also for the colours

    Nope.
Sand the entire thing first with a 320/600 gr paper.
Then use putty to fill the holes. At first the holes won't get totally covered since the air that gets trapped between the putty and the bottom of the hole just won't make it work. So, give it a first try. Sand it again and the putty again. Or you can use some bondo, but since bondo usually gives you little holes anyways, I'd say go with two runs of putty. After you've covered the holes, sand the entire tihng again, with 600 gr paper and under the water in order to make it as smooth as possible.

After that apply the first coat of SPRAY FILLER. Let it dry for at least 15 minutes. Sand it again with 600 gr and water. If the result is good to you, no holes or scratching on site, you can then apply the first coats of paint or you can go with the primer if it's only a primer and not a primer-filler.

    That would be it.
I'm sure other guys here have bigger experteese, but this method usually cuts it for me

What is the difference between a primer and a spray filler? I would want to make sure I get the right stuff.

Mate , as you're in the UK as am I (STEVE0671 the UK Garrison) I'd advise, Pepper Red which is a FORD colour, it's what the TMP suits are painted with , you can get it from Halfords, it's a nice dark colour but shows up just right on the photo's.

Primer is a single coat of paint, where as filler, or "self leveling primer" will do just that - after 2 or three coats it will level its' self out and make it easier for you come fill-time.

The next question would be, are you making a MkIII or a MkIV/VI? The Pepper Red i thihnk would be for a MkIII...

Is the Pepper Red just for the MKIII? Do we have confirmation for that?

Made some progress on the helmet today:

    1. Trimmed the eyes out
    2. Sanded thoroughly all over
    3. Three coats of plastic primer.

Tomorrow I plan to sand all over again and then do the first coat of filler primer.

Did some more work on the helmet today. 4 coats of filler primer.

starting to look even better now. although there are a few small surface marks/indentations I was hoping the filler primer would do a better job of levelling out than it did.

    here are the pics:

Did another coat of filler primer tonight and some more sanding.

Sanding the filler primer does a good job of filling the minor pits but there's still quite a way to go yet with the filler primer and sanding.

Anyway here are a few new photos:

At this point, i would get a bit of spot filler, and just fill those bigger pits, sand them, then hit it with one more coat of filler primer... its going to take forever to fill those bigger pits with coat after coat of filler primer.

Helemts looking great! just be aware of not loosing too much detail in those lines with having so many layers on, some scribing tools on the dremil will help bring those back in if you do

Hey I sent you a PM about it But any putty/drywall mud/bondo/Filler would work since they are small spots

Cheers. I'll probably pick up some filler from my local Halfords.

Finished off sanding the filler primer tonight with wet and dry. It's nice and smooth all over now.

Next job is to fill the small pits and imperfections - there are probably 8 or 9 nothing major. Once they're all sanded flat it should be ready for a final couple of coats of regular primer. Then painting!

Quick photo of tonight's work not much different to last night:

What putty do you suggest Gemini? Does it cure rock hard? I am going to fill in the cheeks of my Iron Man helm.. and dremel the details... But I don't want to use Bondo.. You can see my build in the thread here on the RPF.

Filled in the pits and marks tonight with Isopon .38 (the UK equivalent to Bondo). Will sand these all smooth on Saturday.
