Photoshop Help

Hey Everyone

I'm an avid photoshopper and i'm quite good at photo-manipulation but i need some help.
I'm rubbish at drawing lol, and i want to create some paper props. Have you noticed on certain TV shows or films, they have loads of Oil paintings of characters? Well, i figured that the production team wouldn't exactly spend loads of money on oil paintings, so i'm guessing they are a photoshop job.
Anyhoo, i'm looking for a tutorial or some help on turning a normal picture into an oil painting look a like, i've found some tutorials that help you turn a photo into what looks like a sketch but they look highly fake.

Any and all help would be appreciated :)

Thanks for the help, but i want something that is done in photoshop, like a trick or technique where you just adjust layers etc to make it into a oil painting

Use the Filter tab, select the Artistic filter, scroll down to the pallet knife tool and adjust the amount of effect you want. You can test the amount before clicking Okay. It will give thee look of a brush painting.

Then you can use other filters for final touches, like the brush strokes and paint dobs for added effects.

It will not replace a real painting, as that has a special realistic quality, but this should produce a descent painterly look.

Don't know how wonderful you want it to be, but a quick--and I'm talking 5 minutes-- at it with PSP I got this......

From this

by doing this
Duplicate Layer

Played around with Effects>Artistic Effects>Brush strokes
in a warm color
and Scaled back the opacity till it looked interesting.....

And just for kicks,
Did Brush strokes again on the same scaled layer with a cooler grey color....and got this.......

Probably could get something pretty stellar if you have the patients to keep working at it......

Then print it off and like contec suggested, hit it up with the Mod Podge to give it some 3D textural effects.......

Do you have a budget?

You might want to consider Alien Skin Software: Snap Art 2

I use it. It gives pretty good results, as you'll see on their website.

As with all things Photoshop, it rewards patience. You need to learn how to use it and what the different options do to get the best results.

Thanks for all the help :)
I'm an experienced photoshopper, I do photo-manips all the time :) I just had no idea how to do this - i'll get a screen cap of the affect i'm trying to achieve :) Damn desperate housewives for having this affect on me!

Here's the pic -

see what i mean? it looks very realistic but has a painted-liked quality.

An idea i had was to use the same technique i use for turning people into Twilight-Vampires and smoothing down the skin in the picture i want to use, perhaps add a bit more contrast, saturate strong colours etc. But yes, thats more or less what i'm trying to achieve.

Oh No lol, i'm not trying to create that specific portrait XD just the look of it :)

I actually don't think it was photoshoped or painted. That looks like a photo portrait. The they use a special coating and it looks like brush strokes.

Not to mention, the lighting and the background at the set makes the whole thing appear more like a painting as well. :)
