Phase II Enterprise Study Model

Thanks guys!

As Eric Ardros pointed out, this model's main purpose was to help in researching the Phase II design... but people kept asking for a kit and Jim Key (of Custom Replicas) asked if they could build it. But the plans for a kit are a relatively new development.

At this point, I'm not sure how much a kit will run. Originally I was imagining a less enthusiastic reception to the overall design, but people seem to really like it. I'm not sure at this point and haven't discussed the details further with Jim to re-assess.

The main thing for me (technically) for going forward is making sure I document everything (so I have a good set of plans to work from) and make sure that the masters I build will make good molds and yield a buildable kit. The thing is, with this model I didn't worry too much about parts fitting together and I knew I could rework the attachment areas if needed. A kit has to be designed and built to come together better than anything I did with this model. The only main connection point on this model that fit by design was the dorsal to the underside of the primary hull. Everything else was designed with a certain amount of fudge factor built into them for when I started bringing the parts together as a whole.

And of course I'll have to figure out where to come up with the money to build this stuff too. The cost of building this model was spread out over two years, but the cost of my TOS study model (which was a more direct build of masters at about the same size) gives me a better estimate on how much making the kit masters is going to cost (in both money and actual time).

So there is a lot to consider before I start going forward on a kit. But yeah, it seems like at some point I'll be making a kit.

great looking ship. She looks like a fantastic version of a ship in refit mode for testing. I enjoy looking at it.
Thanks for sharing and I really hope a kit does get made of her.

Thanks!

I've started back in on the plans, mostly finding my old files where I had started in on parts of the ship so I can update them. I've also been playing around with ideas on how to lay out the plans when I finish the actual drawing of them. I realized that I'm going to have a ton of written material to include in the plans as I attempt to describe how this was all to come together.

As a test, because I get asked about the phaser assembly quite a bit (usually "isn't that the torpedo tubes?"), I threw together a quick outline of how it was being approached in Phase II.

Initially, all the weapons were going to fall under the umbrella term phasers (as described in the writers guide), but the set designers (Joe Jennings and Lee Cole) had added in photon torpedo controls for the bridge. So my guess is that while it would have been nice to simplify the weapons, by the time scripts were being finalized, beams would have been called phasers and energy bolts photon torpedoes... but the effects would still all originate from the same spot on the model (which is why weapons assembly may be a better term for it than phaser assembly).

I've been working out how to illustrate different aspects of the design in my final plans (I might utilize photos of my model for some of this) and what combination of type faces I'd like to use (when I laid out one of my clients' books, I had to break down how I was going to deal with these types of things to stay consistent throughout the book). And given the amount of writing I'll be including with the plans, it is starting to seem a little book-like (even if it is done as a series of large sheets).

I know that some people have asked to see the model in action, and there were a couple of things I wanted to see, so here are a few shots I've thrown together...

my fav is the space dock...very cool :)
ive been trying to figure out what that triangle shaped framing is from....

I actually like this Phase II Enterprise design better than the Motion Picture now that i see it.

Thanks a ton guys!

I spent a little more time in Photoshop today to see what I could come up with (though I'd still like to build a larger, more functional model now that I have the overall design hammered out)...

Hey Shaw, have you been able to do anymore work on the new plans?

Just curious to know if you've made any further progress with this subject matter.

I thoroughly enjoy following all of your work on the Phase II Enterprise :)

Also, have you been able to talk to Jim Key further about developing a kit?

It is sorta in a holding pattern.

Most of my free time has been working on the 33 inch TOS Enterprise (which got bumped by the Phase II Enterprise two years ago). What work I've done on making masters for the kit has been using excess supplies from the 33 inch build because I don't have any funds set aside for this (this is the same thing that happened to the one-sixth studio scale study model of the 11 foot Enterprise, which was using what I had on hand from the Phase II Enterprise build... it is on hold as I can't afford to do any additional work on it right now).

The original plan was to finish the Phase II Enterprise by mid summer and start in on the 33 inch Enterprise so I could finish it by the 50th anniversary of the original model being completed... which was on December 14 (so I missed that target).

Plus I needed some time to decompress from doing Phase II stuff... and there is work and school commitments I need to take care of. There is only so much time and money I can throw at this before my wife pulls the plug on this type of stuff.

All that having been said, I did put together some more shots of the model in action...

And here are a few of the model on it's display base (which is almost finished)...

It's funny, I always mount starships several inches above their stands. It's really weird for me to see your ship on its low-rider base, The more I look at it, though, the more I like it. Probably more stable too, especially with a larger model...
