Pepakura without cutting

wow!! that's sweet. if i had a machine like that i would actually try a pep project. as it is it looks way more stressfull to pep a project than i can handle. :)

I had asked another forum member for their opinion, and they said recommended "Make the Cut". They also said SCAL had some bugs.

Considering I found the Cricut at a fraction of what most places sell them, I'll gamble that it will last past the warranty period. I can't say for sure until I have the printer here, but unless it has some kind of keylogger, it shouldn't know if the data input is from a cartridge or other input - UNLESS it has an operating system of some kind that gets overwritten/damaged by the third party software.

My wife does stained glass, so the machine should help with the glass patterns as well (no, not cutting glass - cutting the paper pattern you need in order to cut the glass!)

... to be continued - in another thread.

Tommyfilth: my sincere apologies. I did not mean to hijack your thread :(

No way! the thread is about Pep without cutting, your right on track, I want to know how well the circut works.

OK! Then I'll post here :D

I guess since we're breaking new ground, we can keep tabs (no pun intended) on settings we try, etc. to help anyone else that takes this path to insanity.:eek

My wife does a lot of scrap booking so this might be my in to pleasing her and making life simpler for me as well.....

cricut expressions here I come!

WHOA! Hold on thar, Baba Looey! Before you plunk down $200 +, make sure you want to gamble!

My machine was delivered yesterday. It's going to take a few days before I get things set up and make some test cuts - so right now the only machine we know that works for certain is the CraftRobo. Tommyfilth's demo video is very cool - check it out.

The reason I went with the Cricut was I was able to get the larger machine (12" x 24" capacity) on the cheap. I still had to spring for interface software. If I was going for a smaller machine, I'd probably have opted for the CraftRobo, since it allows for interfacing with a PC without third-party software (see earlier in the thread for warranty concerns).

That said, if everything can be made to play nice together, this should be a pretty kick-butt setup.

ever spring for the interface software WarPig?..... I'm currently looking at the cricut expressions machine as well but don't want to if it's not compatible....

I've been out of town; just got back.

Yes, I bought Makes the Cut. I'm hoping to make a trial run this week to see how things come together.

Feel free to PM me to help keep me on track ;)

Any update on this? I dunno if my hands can keep cutting all this card stock! :cool

I'm interested too!

(BTW, anyone know of a pepakura file for a galactica classic viper helmet?)

My day job has been sucking the life out of me. All of my personal projects are on hold until at least October.

The only reason I chose the Cricut was that I got a good deal on the Expression machine (under $200), and it will handle a paper sheet up to 12" x 24". Of course, if you want to use anything larger than an 8.5" x 11" sheet, you need to go to a paper dealer (Quick-Pick Paper, etc.).

The Cricut also requires a third-party "interface" software that could negate the warranty. Again, I made the choice based on what I read about Make the Cut (software) and cost.

There's no reason this setup *shouldn't* work, but it's not a matter of call up the pep file in Designer, hit "print" and start gluing your pre-cut pieces together. There will be a lot of fiddling, adjustment, and swearing before it starts purring, I'm sure :lol.

Tommyfilth - the OP of this thread - had good results using a CraftRobo cutter - and has the proof of it. Check that out as a possible solution.

So out of the people on here who have bought a CraftRobo can anyone share a model number or something. I'm looking to purchase one to expediate my costume making.:love

Craft Robo CC200-20 (listed as 220 some places) I'm using a MacBook with bootcamp for Pepakura for CraftRobo.

Hi - I was wondering if there was any updates on whether the Cricut cutter will work with Pepakura. I'm considering getting into this (Iron Man costume for next year Halloween!) and my wife has a Cricut machine. Would this work? Would it help?

Thanks

As long as you can get a suitable sofeware interface for it the machine should be able to cut it out. Both the Cricut and Craftrobo are very similar on how they cut, the big difference is that the Craftrobo works with a pc to get its design instructions but the Cticut uses plug in cartridges or a hand held design machine called a Gypsy .

Theoretically they should work. I was wondering if WarPig had the time or any luck in trying to get his Cricut to work cutting out Pep files. I'm about to start learning to Pep / Resin / Glass and if I could use my wife's Cricut, it might be a little less daunting (and kinda cool too!)

Hey I've had a bit of time to play with the Cricut cutters. Using Illustrator with them is possible but if you want the easiest, go with a CraftRobo C100 to C300. Pepakura has a viewer specifically for using with the CraftRobos to cut everything out. I'd also highly recommend getting the aluminum $60 blade holder. Helps with cutting through card stock on a single pass.

The CraftRobo Pro is quite a plotting beast however is not supported by the Pepakura viewer but you can go to Illustrator then to the Robo Pro to make your cuts. Takes a bit more time but takes larger pieces of paper.

Random side note, Pepakura Viewer for CraftRobo Software has issues with Letter sized paper. So you need to set all of your settings to A4 size paper when designing, printing & cutting and you'll be fine.

We've got a Cricut, C200 and CraftRobo Pro here at the office and cut most everything on the C200...

Anyone mess with the Silhouette SD? From what I've read the Silhouette SD is the c330 version of the craft robo? If not, I'll post some unboxing/first setup/use type stuff this weekend.
