Pep Iron Man Mark IV wip

I have been working on my Iron Man suit for about 5 months now and thought I would share the work. I plan to wear the suit so I started working from the feet up. I haven’t ever done pep work before so I wanted to start and get practice on some parts that weren’t right in the persons face in case they didn’t turn out so well lol. Also I figured I would have to remake the cod piece (which I did) and I wanted to make sure I made the upper half large enough to fit over the abs after the increase in size. I sure didn’t want to have to make the chest and back again! I didn’t increase the size much, maybe an inch or so but I wanted to make sure it was close to being the right proportions.

It was my intention to make a War Machine and I still will after this one is done, so this is kinda my practice suit. I’d be happy to answer any questions anyone has and don’t mind some constructive criticism. Just remember this is more a practice suit then something I’m going to show or sell. I do want it to look nice when it’s done though, I don’t want to make crap but I don’t expect it to be perfect.

I would also like to thank so many of you that have put so much time and work into this and made it easier for us to follow in your footsteps. I have to give a HUGE thanks to Robo for all his work on the files I am using. I do plan to donate to the link you have in the thread you made that supplied us with the info and files. And a great thanks to the other guys building the suits, sharing the how-to info and videos. I look forward to getting to know you all better and sharing the knowledge.

Thanks Surreal and Stealth! That means a lot. I need to get the chest on tight and get your opinion on the proportions Stealth (I know your a stickler on that lol). I have read a lot of what you two have posted and its been helpful. Can't wait to see more!

Im working on fiberglass now and getting all the pieces hooked together. I hope to have more updates tomorrow.

Haha thanks Renagade! I can say the first few shoes I made and a few parts you see there didnt turn out so good, but paractice makes perfect. If we could all pep as fast as Stealth we would have it made! :lol

Nice! I love seeing new iron man projects! Cant wait to see more pics! :cool

Is the chest a tad too big though?

what did you use to build the mannequin? Pvc pipe and duct tape? what did you use to form the padded body? I need help with mine :unsure

Thanks Josh. Yea the chest looks big but im hoping its just the way its hanging on there. It isn't attached to anything so its wider than it should be. I made the chest, back, cod, abs and all the parts under them all the same size. Once I get them shaped and attached I guess we will see lol.

Duct Tape Dummy Tutorial

Here is the link for the dummy. I have had a few questions about it so I can explain it here. I had on clothes I got at the Salvation Army and wrapped over it with duct tape. If you want it closer to your actuall size I would wrap up in Saran wrap and tape over that. Its a pvc frame stuffed with 3 pillows and a comforter I got at the Salvation Army also. Just cut up into strips. It took about an hour to get taped up and not to long to stuff. Make sure when you stuff it to keep the shape round. Or whatever your shape is. My dummy hips turned out wider and not as deep as my actual hips (haha I hope anyway). But its fairly easy to move the stuffing around if you need to.

Hope that helps!

Not a lot to update, I just worked on putting resin on the outside of arms and shoulder and putting glass inside shins. I did come up with an idea of using a metal hanger to help keep the shape until the resin hardened. It also gives a handy handle to hold onto while you brush it on. You sure go through a lot of paint brushes mixing a new batch about every 12 minutes though. I tried cleaning them but im not sure they will work even after they have been cleaned.

it's a better idea to resin the inside instead so the resin won't puddle in the beveled areas. With your brush problem, find a Harbor Freight Tools because they have a 1" brush for $6.99 for a box of 36.

I'd recommend using a 30% MEK-P too so you have a longer pot life. 10 drops of that per 2 oz. of resin should give you at least 30 mins of pot life.

Great advice Tiger! That info is going to save me a TON of work and money. I remember reading that about the MEK before, thanks for refreshing my memory. Now I can do bigger batches and get more done at a time. WAY less agrivating lol. Thanks for the help :)

Wow that is superb, all from pep too cant wait to see it all finished.

I appreciate it Bobatrooper! You are off to a good start on your suit too. Im a big Boba fan, cant wait to see it finished. I'll be watching for updates too.

Just a few updates. I went and bought a nice, inexpensive heat gun from Ace hardware so I can fine tune the shapes. It works AMAZING so thank you Stealth for showing that in your video. I finished fiberglassing the legs and have been working on cleaning them up when I get the time. I have them ready to connect using stand off bolts I bought. After they are connected I will start to bondo them with the ight weight body filler I bought. I also got some buckles I will use to connect the back to chest and legs to cod along with a few extra just in case. The buckles have a one sided release which I thought would be easier to use than the two sided...so we will see.

great work... where did you get all the buckles from?

Here is where I got mine Custom Straps, Nylon & Polypro Webbings, Metal & Plastic Buckles at Strapworks.com im sure you may be able to find them cheaper somewhere else but I liked the company and they had a great selection. Im a big fan of one stop shopping lol. They also have a free grab bag of strap pieces in the sale section which I thought was useful being I didn't need a lot of strapping. Of course I got the red strap also just in case.
Hope it helps.

Not sure where he got his.. but I got a box of them from ebay.

Ebay is also a great place to get them! Thanks GJ. The more information the better.
