Penny Dreadful Tarot Cards

the box looks 8x8x2 hand chip carved

i drew up this pattern

20160507_164423.jpg
the doted lines are relief cuts

no real complex carving but would be very time intensive to hand carve it all.

AH !!! I was fooled by perspective. Yes, now that you say it, the box DOES look square.

I checked 3D printing in Wood. Yes, wood. It wouldn't give the right finish, and it would be pricey. So probably won't do that.

Thanks for the drawing. That is helpful.

I bought some boxes at Michaels. If I cut down the top lid, I should be able to get something serviceable.
These are 8 x 8 on the outside dimension.

I need some pics or description of how the lid is on there.

i would think if the box is not inner hinged its a interlocking lift off box like this

box top_.jpg
though the interlock could be reversed and in the lid (how i like to make my boxes)

i just picked up a 6'x8"x1" blond pine board to try my hand at chip carving before i make/buy boxes. the Michaels near mt house only had rectangular boxes :(.

Hot damn. Only had time to skim so far, but have to say that I am very interested in everything that's happening in here.

Did you check their clearance section ? (mine was at the front of the store)

One of my boxes was 8 x 8 x 2 and was on clearance for $2.09 !!!!!

The other box was $14 but I had a 40% off a single item coupon that I printed off their website.

Penny Dreadful is definitely adult content. But I think the Tarot Cards and Box will make a unique prop that would make a conversation piece even for people who haven't seen the series.

looking at the boxes you have in the video im going to revise my guess on the dimensions of the box to 8x8x3 with i 2 inch bottom and a 1 inch top. thats a grate deal on the boxes i will have to check Jo-ann fabric and hobby lobby (note: i hate shopping at hobby lobby) to see if i can find something like that

Take a tape measure. The inside dimension needs to be slightly bigger than the 6.5 inch card.

If you can't find them in a Craft or Hobby store, you can use the search terms, ARTMINDS BASSWOOD CANVAS 8 x 8

This is good for the top piece, as it's the shorter of the two boards in my video.

The Top (Bottom?) on my Artminds board is 1/4 inch thick. That would allow only shallow carving, so I still may have to replace the top surface.

updated pattern its not quite perfect so i would do a practice carving on some scrap before doing the final just to make sure all the chip cuts work

all blue lines are recessed cuts all black lines are raised edges

Beautiful. I'm going to guess it was easier to draw than to carve. ;)

i ran it through Photoshop and the bottom is 3 inches the lid is 1 1/4 the bottom is 1 3/4

Okay, the bottom is 1 3/4. So, the Artminds box I recommended above, would work.

the drawing in Photoshop only took about a hour while i was catching up on podcasts it looks complex but relay it just 5 parts and alot of copy/pasting. i was considering using it as a practice in 123d but it keep crashing my crappy laptop so...

anyway i was looking at buying a chip knife sets and was debating the cost to use ratio. i love sharp things and new tools are always a good thing but then i looked over at the dremel on my desk and realized "i have a dremel on my desk" so im going to try the $12.00 carving/engraving set from dremal first because i know ill use them all the time

another way to go about it would be to find someone will a cnc mill like a x-carve but you would lose some of the handmade imperfections that give a box like that character

her are a few practice attempts with tools i had on hand

in both pics the left side is done with a dremal tool carving bit and the right is chip carved with a irwin razor knife

bearing in mind that this is a pine 2x4 and not very good wood i think if i get a smaller carving bit on the dermal it will look pretty good and work better in curves. the same amount of carving was done in a quarter of the time using the dremal vs the knife the drawback being you dont really get nice crisp lines on the relief part of the carving.

Can you rough it out with the dremel and then clean up the edges with the knife ?

Thank you for all your work. You're really good at spotting detail in the picture. I was having a tough time telling what shape
was with that "X" on the side of the box.

With a good knife the carving with a knife will actually be just as fast, if not faster. The problem is it takes skill, and woodcarving takes a bit of time to learn.

i think once i get the chance to get to the hardware store and get the correct bits for the dremal the relief cuts will look a lot cleaner

right now the only engraving bit i have is about the same size as the 3rd from the left shown in the picture. i think once i get something more like the 6th or 7th one from the left i will be able to duplicate the chip carved look quite nicely. im going to try running one of the small bits and make all the relief cuts center lines the right depth then "erase" the wood in a outward kind of motion to the raised edge slowly letting up on the depth the whole time. its that or breakdown and buy a $50 set of flex cut chip knifes off amazon and do A LOT of practicing.

i also made a box today. a feat that was made much more difficult than it should have been as the table saw i have access to is garbage and wouldn't make clean cuts. with some sanding i think it came out ok. im letting the glue dry overnight before i attempt to run it through the crappy saw to separate the top and bottom half. unfortunately the inner measurement of the box is only 6 1/2 inches because the cheap board i got to play around with had a thickness of 3/4 inch. the next lumber i buy will be 1/2 so i get a 7 inch inner measurement instead.

Nice box. We need some good pictures, there might be hinges. But since we can see 2 sides of the box, if it has hinges, it has no clasp or lock.

i cut the box open and cut lips into the top and bottom sections so they interlock
cutopenbox.jpg

then i took some wax paper and taped it to a regular piece of paper so i could run it through my inkjet printer after reversing the image in photoshop. i taped it to the box and used a clothing iron to heat it up and a credit card to squeegee the image onto the wood home made transfer sheet style.

and i have decided it is faster and easier to use my Sheffield folding razor knife to do the chip carving. i tried the dremal but you cant get really good relief cuts. i also tried my pocket knife and a variety of box cutters and utility knifes. the folding razor worked the best mostly because you can grip it comfortably very close to the blade. i did some investigating and as far as chip knifes go you cant get a really good one for less then $50 and i dont have that kind of cash to spend on one knife right now (i will be making one of my own the next time i fire up the forge to anneal something)

but the box is starting to come together the next thing i have to do is figure out what stain color i need

also if you head over to the shotime web page they have a online tarot card game (its not very good)
