LOL - it's not like they're required to. I'm sure the base stores carry all sorts of religious jewelry and paraphernalia, and selling to the military requires that you're GSA certified, so this company probably just won the bid to sell its jewelry to the military. I'm sure it or some other company has the same rights to supplying the military with crosses.
I'd bet Newman's Own Star of David is made of silver, not stainless steel, but I could be wrong. Is that shot of him from Exodus? If so, that star might be a one-off made for the movie, since it was made in 1960.

Because of the lack of interest and information I don't think I'll be pursuing the "Paul Newman version", but the GI version is pretty cool. I might chase that down at some point.
