Painting and Mounting Vigo; FINISHED!

I've finally nailed down my different techniques to get Vigo all 'realed' up.
I played around with all sorts of different techniques, and upon hitting a wall, found this great stuff called Mog Podge.
You can get it pretty much world wide as well as online, and it's as easy as brushing on, and even better, is easily cleaned with hot water and soap.
Here's the results of two coats over a sealing coat of Krylon Cystal clear

I'm going for a softer, fan brush painted look, as most Midevil paintings were velvety soft in their layers. For the backround clouds, I produced a curving, wide brush stroke, and for the face/figure, I alternated between dabbing strokes, and thicker lines around detailed areas. I even put thick drops onto spots and spikes on the armor. In other words, I embraced my inner Bob Ross ('Happy little Carpatian!").

There's also a few places where well placed thick lines, dabs, etc. really enhance the 'hand painted' look.

Notice how, along the middle 'v' of the chest armor and rasied forearm line, the color definition changes. This stuff really helps the image to 'pop' and completes the look as well.

I've moved onto the crackle layer, and have layed down a crackle medium, and am allowing it to dry over night. If you're going to use the Mod Podge, any water based clear coating crackle medium should work fine. An acrylic brand should also be okay.

Stear clear of enamels. They may make the ink run.

After that, another thin layer of Mod Pdge should produce a nice, subtle cracked layer, then I can seal Vigo up with some more Krylon clear coat.

Mounting will come last, as I don't want the painting to sag into unsupported parts of the frame. I want it to be very taut, like a drum head.

Enjoy the pics! More to come!

I went ahead and lyed my last layer onto the crackle medium, and the results were a bit more subtle than I wanted, but I like it. THe painting has it's last layer on, and I've taken the chance to add some final detailing, lke thick drops on the spikes, etc on the armor, and some thicker defining lines on the face, etc.

I'ts coming along realllly great, and i'm excited to move onto the next 1/4 of the painting.

Y'know, the original product looked good enough, but you're really making it look... gooder. :p

Looks nice. I dont think I will try it the next time... I will check how it looks on a wall... That will be impressive enough, and maybe I can contact a friend of mine, he knows a lot of these things, and maybe he can paint it for me, before I do something wrong...

I haven't done any oil painting since I was a child. THIs was pretty easy. NOthing toxic, nothing that was worse than working with white glue.

The best part of the Mog Pogde is that you can pait it one very thin, and add, add, add, or you can throw down some nice thicker strokes. Either way, you have like 5 minutes of working time.

I started on the corners to get a comfort level, and just kinda went from there.

I'm not doing anything to 'specialized' on this, just kinda working like a kid in a coloring book.

Wow! I didn't notice this before. What is going on here, exactly? Is this a group project? The painting in GB2 was huge... how big is this one? The work you're doing on this is great, HotShot, but I can't paint a house, let alone a portrait. Looks like a lot of work!

Nope, it's very simple. I'm basically just laying down a lcear coat, i a kinda of pretend oil painting direction. THInk of it like clear coating a page in a coloring book!!
THen add to that idea pretend brush strokes . . . curving strokes for clouds, hard lines for rock and structures, alternating thickness lines for face and clothes, etc. Honestly, it's very, very simple, and not out of anyone's reach at all. All were doing is accenting the print.

Errmm... straight foward enough, I imagine. Let me think about this for a second. Don't answer a question, then speculate why the inquirer doesn't know the answer. :confused

I must be on the R.P.F.! :ninja

Thanks for answering the question about the size of the print. :lol

It would be cool to mount some leds behind his eyes for a subtle touch of evil. That is if you could even get light through the print.

That stuff really sells it as a painting. Looking great so far. :thumbsup
