Paint Question: Rustoleum and Duplicolor - Vader

Hi all,

Im repainting my Vader ANH Bucket and have a paint question.

I painted the black on the Vader facemask with Rustoleum Gloss Black and probably got the best finish on it (and the dome) I have EVER been able to accomplish with rattlecans.

After waiting a few days for the paint to gas off and cure, I want to mask the face and paint on the silver areas with the DupliColor Truck and SUV Paint in Gunmetal.

Will these two paints have a reaction?

The Rustoleum is an enamel.

The Duplicolor is *I THINK* an acrylic lacquer.

Can I safely spray the Duplicolor over the fully cured Rustoleum?

Thanks,
Sean

Just a few other factors:

I used Rustoleum Gray Automotive Primer (&wetsanded) as the base coat.

I know the R2 guys use the "Krider" method for their hypo blue and layer Duplicolor over Rustoleum paints.....

I just dont want to mess up my Vader!!!:lol

As with any time I mix any paints!.........Test it on a something else???
it is the only way to know for sure!......:thumbsup

Always test it first. But to answer you question. YES. Expect a reaction.
If you plan on clear coating it, DON'T. Especcially since you used a "non-automotive" paint.

Is there an underlying reason why I should expect a paint reaction?
Is it the types of paint? Or have you had this experience?
Thanks so much!

Sean, as has been suggested I would spray a bit of the Rustoleum on something else and then spray the Dupli-color over it to be sure, but after the Rustoleum enamel has fully cured I see no reason for a reaction with the Dupli-color. The brand you mentioned is acrylic-lacquer, and should not cause a reaction with the enamel. Normally stronger paints(eg. enamels) used over weaker paints(eg. acrylics) can eat the weaker paint underneath and cause it to wrinkle and do all sorts of nasty stuff. It's usually not a problem to spray an acrylic based paint over an enamel. I do it all the time in modelling applications. As for clearing, the fact that you didn't use an "automotive" paint has nothing at all to do with anything. None of the rattle can paints are automotive. Krylon takes their standard paint and sticks it in a can with a better quality spray nozzle and sells it under the brand Dupli-color in automotive colors. That DOES NOT make it automotive paint. I know for a fact that the Dupli-color enamel clear will not react with the gunmetal you have used, and I doubt it will react with the Rustoleum enamel, but try it out on something else first just to be safe. Good luck bud.:thumbsup

One basic rule. Enamel can go over lacquer but NO lacquer over enamel.

Although when it comes to rattlecans I am NO expert because generally I stick with automotive paints through a spray gun.

And I highly recommend going to a spray gun. You can get a detail gravity feed spray gun for $12 at harbor freight and $99 compressor.

You will be amazed at the CONTROL you have moving to a more professional set up. Try it. You'll hate rattle cans the rest of your life but your props will look better.

Micdavis,

Is this rule applicable for acyrlic lacquers as well?

Can an acrylic lacquer be sprayed over an enamel?

If so, how many days should I give the enamel layer to gas off and cure before putting down the acrylic lacquer?

Thanks,
Sean
