Packing up an X-Wing for a customer. A little foam and a electric knife make it really quick work for a secure shipping container.

That looks great! A great way to store it if not on display too. Where do you get your foam and what is an electric knife?

One caution: be careful of dents from the sides of the box near the wings and engines. When I received a finished CC x-wing a few years ago, it was protected in bubble wrap and peanuts, but just the movement during shipping cracked off two of the engines!

Most excellent sir!

Ya know? Greg is one of the BEST at insuring the best packing of these valuable pieces! Nothing short of ABSOLUTE PROFESSIONALISM!!!

Excellent post and great tutorial Greg! (y)cool:thumbsup

That's a very good idea, I like it. As many of these X Wings that are being built for people, it would almost be worth it for all the builders to chip in and get custom foam pieces like that made.

Great idea Greg, and great job on the bird, they are so hard to package, but i think you have it nailed there buddy!

Fit in a 24X14X10 box and with our deal with UPS it only cost me $7 to ship

I really can't complain

EDIT** As a side note I shipped the Panavise directly to the customer from the site I bought it from so I dont have to mess with fitting it in the box. Started doing that when I built Kurt's BlackBird.

Looks good but if you are shipping that either UPS, USPS or FedEx and it gets damaged, you may have trouble collecting. All of them claim 2" of packing material surrounding all parts or it's "not adequately packaged". Good Luck.

I doubt it will get damaged unless a sharp object goes threw it. great packing job!!!

Where does one get foam like that?

Not sure where you can buy it but my company uses it and we get it in from other companies shipping us electronics

That is always a risk but I got my fingers crossed

:) Thanks It is supported in pretty much every direction. Should know tomorrow or so if there were any complications.

I'm laughing that R2 gets his own little slot in the foam as well as the bird.

:lol

Nice packing job with the custom cut foam!

For those of you who are curious...Greg's packing abilities proved out pretty darn good. She arrived and in great condition. With all do respect to Greg's packing abilities they pale in comparison to his build abilities. He did an amazing job on this one. I cant say enough on how well this X-Wing turned out. Thanks Greg for an outstanding job! As soon as I get her together on the stand, I'll post some pics.

Glad she made it there Ed, I was getting anxious about it. Can't wait to see the pics.

Thanks for the kind words and being a first rate client.

Greg

if you know anyone that works in IT, hard drives are usually shipped in that sort of foam.

we buy a lot of storage arrays, so we'll get 100 drives at a time, layered in that awesome black foam.

i've got a big box of it in my attic for future use. also great as helmet padding!
