P2 Armor UPDATE Backplate finished.

Here are some pictures of the first casting of the CHEST ARMOR from P2.

Cast in BONDO and fiberglass resin. Very durable and a tad flexible.

My only thing i will do differently on the next casting is make the width at the part between the lower stomachs a lil SKINIER. Its a bit too wide.
its easy enough to do by just bending the mother mold inwards to make the casting smaller there when i pour the resin.

Overall i am SUPER EXCITED and happy this turned out great.

I am considering doing a BONDO and Fiberglass tutorial if there is anyone who is curious how to do this sorta thing. I found it hard and STINKY but overall rewarding.

Pics below.

update on the armor.

I finished casting the backplate. Painted it and you can view it below. I have encountered a few design problems tho. 1. How to connect the two piece but still make the armor able to be put over my head and onto a suit. Once they are attached firmly its nearly impossible to squeeze into this rig. Nevermind the shoulder piece which will have to be attached.

The center section where the MEDIPACK should be is where it will be attached. It will be hollow, room for battery packs or whatver else needs to be stored out of view.

peace out homies.
PS I dont entirely like the paintjob. Dunno why but it aint jiving with me...

THIS IS ALSO A CONTINUING WORK IN PROGRESS.

That's kick ass my friend. The fit looks good to me. Once your suit skin is on it should fill the gap a bit. Not sure about bondo and fiberglass resin. I've played with that stuff before but it seemed a bit too brittle. Again awesome work nice paint too.

I did sculpt the back for this. Its completed sitting covered in silicone. I just need to do a mothermold for it today. And hopefully get a casting today if all goes well.

The whole thing will be 5 pieces. Front Back, Shoulder, Pauldron, Medicomp and Lower Back Spine cover.

Still have alot of work ahead.

Amazing looking. I always prefered the separate armor parts over the body instead of the molded on latex armor parts. Gives it a more realistic feel when people see you.

Way to go Gene!!

That looks bad-ass. I really like the texture work you did on it too. The paint work looks sweet too! Pssssssssssst... the buckle is silver.

What was your experience working with fiberglass? I've never dealt with it, but I've heard that **** is toxic as all get-out. Details man, details! And where does Bondo come into play?

Nice work my friend, nice work.

:)

And where does Bondo come into play?

From what I understand about costume fiberglassing, the bondo is the outer layer "skin" that you view as the surface of the front of the piece. The backside is the fiberglass matting/resin.

The armor looks awesome, Gene!!!

The work you put into it really comes through. It's got "better-than-movie-quality" written all over in every nook and cranny!!!

~DD

Good job Geen-o!
Looks like you've lost some weight since the last time I've seen you---could be why there's extra room around the belly!
So, you used silicone for the mold material? Is it poured, or brushed on? Brush-on urethane rubber for the mold with a fiberglass outer jacket would have been another way to go. Looks great, even if it is that limp wristed P2 pred! :)

HAHA LIMP WRISTED!!!! Good one.

Yea i did loose a lil weight been weight training and jogging alot. Its hard but i am loosin bout 2 pounds a week.

Anyway.

FETT was right i use the BONDO as the FIRST COAT inside the mold. I take a chip brush and brush it all around the entire mold and basically push it into all the details. Sometimes i use my fingers if need be. But i do this then i brush on a layer of fiberglas resin. Let that set. Then i take my fiberglass MATT which is cut into strips and various shape and i just start placing them where i need them. While the strips are on the surface i brush on ANOTHER layer of fiberglass resin which the MATT absorbs. I figure the more i do it the better i will get at it. If i was an expert i could get the interior surface against your body to be perfectly smooth. Practice makes perfect.

I prefer this silicone mold to URETHANE RUBBER carl. I like silicones detail level. Its one of those things where i just wanted to "Stick to whatcha know". Didnt wanna take any chances on my baby.

Someone mentioned they had done fiberglass and it was flimsy. This is not the case with what i did. I did two to 3 layers of fiberglass resin AND MATT as i described above and its very strong. Heck they make boat hulls out of this ****.

YES ROB ITS TOXIC. I did it outside and had a fan blowing over my back to blow away fumes but its still bad. A straight hour of playing with this stuff and my eyes are irritated and my skin kinda feels like a sunburn kinda. Well maybe not a sunburn but it feels irritated. Its not fun and if i ever produce any to sell i will definitly do the whole POR-A-KAST MARK2 resin deal. I would only make my personal castings from the fiberglass.

Oh yea and the layer of BONDO in case your wondering is very thin. Its kinda like frosting a cake in that sense when you spread it around. I am gonna try to do a casting made strictly of FIBERGLASS resin and see how that turns out.

Glad all you guys liked it. I am finishing the BACKPLATE today and will probably have something to show mid next week.

Rob i wanted to see if you where interested in teaming up with me on this. I planned on making the MEDICOMP part of the backplate seperate but i was thinking it would be cool to see what you could come up with for the sculpt. If your not buisy with another project and your interested let me know.
