Original Series: He-man's Sword of Power

Hey Guys,

Here is a personal project that I've been working on in my spare time (little as it is) for about a year now. The blade is a one off at this time, and I'm don't currently have plans to reproduce it. The waxes are about 75% completed and just need fine tuning in the shaping of the ram's horns, and slight thinning of the overall thickness of the guard arms.

After that, it is the easy part of molding and shooting waxes for the foundry.

Once this one is done, it will be the long difficult process (considering my schedule) of making a Sword of Omens for myself.

I'm in love with that sword from my childhood...
Your sword looks very close to the original. (Probably an "idealized" version should be cool, but this is really outstanding :D )

It would be a shame to put all that work and $$'s into this project and not offer up a few extras for sale to recoup your costs.

Yes... I'm on the verge of begging for my very own copy. :angel

I was such a fan of the He-Man toys when I was a kid that I was upset when the cartoons premiered. The way the characers were portrayed in the 'toon were nothing like the way I had imagined them.

That looks great, I'd be VERY INTERESTED in a "Sword of Omens"...

I found this Pic on the Web, I'd love to have one.

If you make any for sale let me know, I'd buy one. :D Hint, Hint...

Only complaint is that the hand should be a "tube", not so pointy. BTW, if you get this right, and cast them, you can make enough money to build COUCHES out of by selling em on He-Man.org...

Trust me. They're DYING for a realistic old power sword. Trust me on this...money to be made.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm an 80's kid, and while the reasons for me getting into the sword business are long, these two shows (He-man and Thundercats) are what got me interested in swords in the first place.

Macrossmaster, the pic I took is of the unfinished waxes for the hilt components and the bare, finished blade. The silver you see between the pommel and guard (where the grip will eventually be) is the tang of the blade itself. Once the sword is done, the grip will be a wooden core, covered in black leather. I know that the leather is a departure from the cartoon, but the sword as illustrated is all one piece of metal.

I'm building this sword to be hot-rivetted (hot-peened) together, so the grip will be the last part of the sword to be completed, after the guard and pommel are attached. I find this method faster, simpler (with the correct equipment), and with less margin for error than if I were to thread the pommel on.

Wow. Who ever made that sword of omens did an amazing job.
If one was made similar to that, I would buy it too. Double Hint. :D

"I know that the leather is a departure from the cartoon, but the sword as illustrated is all one piece of metal."

The leather itself is part of the version of the sword that you are doing. There are several different versions out there depending on what you are looking at. The one that you have above strongly looks like the version in the original comic books that came with the figure before the "He-Man/Prince Adam" arc was developed.

There is also the cartoon version that the guard is completely connected around the blade. Then there are the newer comic books that followed the He-Man/Prince Adam arc. And you can't forget the "violent" Golden books style as well. I think there are a couple of others, but they are slipping my mind.

Any who, in some of those early versions (or different versions later), there is a leather wrap around the handle. So you really aren't getting away from the cartoon version at all ;)

Double thumbs up though for you have above :D :D :D :D :D

This is a very cool project I have been dying to track down an original version of this sword.

That pic of the sword of omens is a 3D rendering, not an actual sword I came across the guys site last year while researching the sword.

Very nice. I've been wanting to make one of these for ages, and it's great to see someone else getting around to it. What are you casting it in, aluminum or other alloy? Nice choice in style too. Is this meant to be a sharpened functional blade (I ask because of the heavy tang). It's a great job, and I'm sure it's gonna look fantastic after casting. :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

The blade shown is made from a low alloy, carbon steel. I've already heat-treated and polished the blade. I integrate sharpened sword edges into all my blades, unless the customer request them as blunts. The hilt furniture will be cast in a mild steel. I don't like working with any materials which won't age and/or patinate (no stainless or brass, don't liku'm).

Wow. Glad to see it go that extra step. This is one of those pieces I always wanted to see done in a realistic manner (ie: steel and sharp). You're going to have a very impressive piece on your hands, and it'll only get better with age. Are you doing a sheath/harness setup as well?

I don't do that kind of leather work (although I suppose I could if I wanted to....), but I've talked to a friend of mine who is a professional leathersmith and he may do a scabbard and harness for me. I'm not sure yet.

The harness is something I could have him make templates of and sell off of my site now though......hmmm. Something to think about..... :love

Jason,
Very nice work.
It's nice to see someone else on the RPF that takes their cutlery serious ;)
Quick question for you though... What are the dimensions on that bad boy?
It looks like it'd weigh a ton (a ton is around 8-10 pounds in the sword world) :)
NIK

One other thing, not to hijack or anything but is there any news from your employer about what's going on with the Kurgan sword they're doing?
As you might have guessed from my screen name I'm dying to get one but I haven't seen any updates on the site.

Hey Nik,

The scaling in the picture is a little deceiving, but I scaled this to normal human proportions, no Hollywoods. The blade length is only about 30'', overall length is just under 37", and the blade at it's widest is 2.875". I'm estimating that the weight will likely be around the 3 lbs. range or so. It all depends on the guard casting at this point.

Kurgan front----We recently were loaned (what we were told was) a hilt from one of the stunt props. We're in the process of molding this, cleaning it up, and retooling everything to fit the new dimensions. I'm going to essentially be starting from the ground up (blade included), once I get a raw wax casting from the temporary mold.

This has been a very complicated project, because the prop is not structually sound as a real sword. From looking at screencaps and lighting angles, it appears that the "Tang" of the blade is actually attached to the pentagon on the backside of the blade, and not a part of the blade itself. The cutouts are pivot points for the blades to turn in, and are in line with the blade that way.

I have to engineer a mechanism that will snap both blades from a seared and locked position in unison, and cam up into place. All this has to be made in a frame that surrounds the blade and fits inside the guard body. It needs to be able to be "bench fired" off the sword, so that it will work for the breifcase version. With all the current "Albion Mark" projects, my time on developing anything for Filmswords R&D has been extremely limited.
